On Motion, the petitioner was brought at Court & having proved that Notice was duly served on John D Carrington at whose Suit he hath been confined in the Jail of Orange County, It is Ordered that the Insolvent debtors Law be extended to him ??????? thereupon took the Oath prescribed by Law and is accordingly discharged.

On the petition of James Palmer & others, It is Ordered that the Sheriff summon a Jury of good & lawful men to view & lay off a road to ???????? continue along the road from Hillsborough to Galbraith’s ferry til it passes the house of James Palmer and then leave said Road and enter the present road from Hillsborough to Hunter’s ford on Haw River on the lands of said James Palmer.

Ordered that the Sheriff of this County have Subpoenas to be immediately served on Samuel Peelor, Benjamin Peelor & Jeany Copley and Rachel Copley Witnesses in behalf of the state against Ned a negro man slave the property of Thomas Holloway charged with the murder of Robert Grisham and that the Subpoenas be returned unto Court at 10 o’Clock to morrow.

On Motion of Archibald D Murphy esqr Atto &c founded on the aff[idavi]t of James Hutcheson & ???? to enquire into the state of the Mind of John Anderson, whereupon the following Jury was impannelled & Sworn, to wit: William Kirkland, David Yarbrough, William Laycock, Cutbird Burton, Goodman Nevill, John Rogers, Thomas Latta, William Bradshaw, Andrew McCauley, Henry Faucett, James Child, William Willis. Find that the said John Anderson is an Idiot. Whereupon William Anderson is appointed Guardian to the said John Anderson who enters into Bond with James Hutcheson & James Mason his Security in the sum of £200.

Ordered that James Mebane & James Hutcheson be appointed a Committee to assist with Settlement of the Accounts of Benjamin Roney Ex’r of the last Will of William Anderson Dec’d.

It appearing to the Court that for the payment of debts due & owing by the estate of James Mebane? Dec’d it is necessary that some of the negroes of said Estate should be sold, It is Ordered that leave be given to the Executors to sell as many of said Negroes as will be sufficient to discharge the debts due by said Estate.

The State vs Robert Clinton & others} Sci fa. Jury Sworn: William Kirkland, David Yarbrough, William K?????ck, Cutberd Burton, Goodman Nevill, John Rogers, Thomas Latta, William Bradshaw, Andrew McCauly, Henry Faucett, James Child, William Willis – find that there were such breaches as set forth in the Sci fa & the Court thereupon adjudged that there is such record and on motion Judgment it is considered by the Court that the State recover of Robert Clinton two hundred & fifty pounds and from the Defendant Geo Carrington One hundred & twenty five pounds which may be discharged by the payment of fifty pound and from Defendant William P Mangum one hundred & twenty five pounds which may be discharged by the pay’t of fifty pounds. Ordered that James Craig, William Cain & William Lockhart be fined 20/ each for their nonattendance as Talismen at the Call of the Sheriff.

Ord On Motion it is Ordered that James Mebane be appointed Guardian to Frances and Joseph McCaddams Orphans of Hugh McCadddams dec’d and enters into Bond with John Taylor Jr & William Rogers his Securities in the Sum of £750.

Ordered that Alexander Pickard be released from the pay’t of the Taxes on two black polls, he being overcharged on his list to that Amount.

Administration on the Estate of Robert Grisham dec’d is granted to Catharine Grisham Widow who enters into bond with Thomas Redding & Riley Vickers in the Sum of £50.

Administration on the Estate of Elizabeth Moore Dec’d is granted to Asael Moore who enters into Bond with William Clark & Joseph Hodge who enters into Bond with of £500.

James Hart is appointed Guardian to Samuel Hart Orph of L???? ???? his son and enters into Bond with Joseph Stubbins his Security in the Sum of £250.

On motion, John Ray is appointed Processioner in Orange District.

Ordered that John Lingo Son of Leah Lingo now of the age of about 12 years of age be bound to William McKee until he arrives to lawful age to learn the art & mistery of a farmer. [Bond not found.]

Ordered that the Indentures of Reeves Lingo heretofore bound to William McKee be annulled [OCPQS 8/578]. It is thereupon Ordered that said Reeves Lingo be bound to Aaron Ellis until he arrives to lawful age to learn the art & mistery of a farmer. [Bond not found.]

Ordered that Administration on the Estate of Samuel Allen Dec’d is granted to John Taylor Jr who enters into Bond with John Umstead his Sec’y in the Sum of £2000.

A Deed from George May to Thomas Atkinson presented to the Court and it being suggested that the said May and Daniel Epps, Wm Hutchings and Peter Mason & Edward Wells who purport to be subscribing Witnesses thereto reside in the Town of Petersburg and State of Virginia, It is Ordered that a Commission issue to Robert Birchett, Nathaniel Friend and John Wilder or any two of them to take the acknowledgement of said May as to the Execution of said Deed or the Testimony probate thereof On Oath of by the said Subscribing Witnesses or either of them and return the same to Next Court under their hands & seals. A Deed from Henry Hays & Anny Hays to George May was presented to this Court and it being suggested that the said Henry Hays & Anne Hays and Robert Atkinson, Robert Hays & John Ponsonby? who purport to be subscribing witnesses thereto reside in the Town of Petersburg in the State of Virginia. It is Ordered that a Commission issue to Robert Burchett, Nathaniel Friend and John Wilder or any two of them to take the acknowledgment of said Henry & Ann Hays as to the Execution of said Deed or the testimony probate thereof on Oath of by the said Subscribing Witnesses or either of them as to said Execution and return the same to our next Court under their hands & seals. The Execution of a Deed from John Guess & Betsey his wife was duly acknowledged by John Guess in open Court and at the same time Betsey Guess wife of the said John Guess appeared in Court and Henry Thomson & John Cabe esquires two of the Justices of the Bench and holding the said Court was appointed to examine the said Betsey privily & apart from her said husband touching her free & voluntary execution of the Deed, Who having examined the said Wife apart from her husband & privily, Reported that the sd Betsey upon such examination did acknowledge that she duly executed the said Deed freely & without compulsion. Whereupon it was ordered by the Court that the said Deed be registered. [See ODB 16/236.]

The Execution of the last Will & Testament of Jeremiah Glenn Dec’d was duly proved in open Court by the Oath of Dempsy Wood a Subscribing Witness thereto & Ordered to be recorded at the same time William Glenn one of the Executors therein named qualified accordingly. [See OWB D/475.]
