Nelson Pope, Hugh Woods & William Woods having been guilty of an affray in the presence of the Court and having been brought before the Court, It is Ordered that the said Nelson Pope, Hugh Woods & William Woods be fined twenty Shillings each for the contempt shewn the Court and that they stand committed until the fines are paid.

John E Carson vs Robert A Carson} Jury No 1 charged. Plaintiff called & non Suit, appeal prayed & Granted.

John Den on demise of Wm F Strudwick vs Margaret Mebane} John Ray having heretofore been appointed a Surveyor for the Defendant & by omission his appointment having been not entered of record, It is now by consent of the parties entered nunc pro tunc. [This dispute had to do with slight differences between the boundary of Pollock Tract 1 and Moseley Tract 1 – one version of the line having been surveyed in the 1750’s by William Churton and another in the 1760’s by John Lea. The slight gap between the two was claimed under a state land grant to Alexander Mebane, but the Strudwicks felt that there was no land between the Moseley & Pollock Tracts and therefore the land was Strudwick’s. It is ordered that Josiah Turner Sheriff &c be fined five pounds for not attending in Court & keeping order &c. [In left margin:] remitted.

It is ordered that James Lockhart & Thomas Bilbo be fined Two pounds each for not attending This Court as Constables & keeping order in Court & stand committed till the fines be paid. [In left margin:] remitted.

Wm Barbee vs John May} Lieutenant William Pannell Bail &c surrenders the Defendant in discharge of the said Bail. Whereupon it is moved that the said John May be committed to the Custody of the Sheriff in Execution. The Defendant having by his Counsel objected, he being enlisted in the Service of the United States as a private in the Army of the United States and now in Service which appearing to the Court, the Court refused to grant said motion.

Martin Palmer by ?? vs Epps Hilliard} Josiah Turner esq Shff &c & bail surrenders the Defendant in discharge of said bail, Whereupon it is moved by the Council for the plaintiff that the said Epps Hilliard be committed to the Custody of the Sheriff in Execution. The Defendant having by his Council objected, he being enlisted in the Service of the United States as a Private in the Army of the United States and now in Service which appearing to the Court, the Court refused to grant said Motion.

Judgment of the Court that the Defendant be imprisoned ten days and be fined five pounds and stand committed until the fine & Costs are paid from which Judgment the Defendant prays an appeal.

The State vs John D Carrington} Ind’t. Same Jury Sworn, find the Defendant Guilty in manner & form as charged in the bill of Indictment. Judgment of the Court that the Defendant be imprisoned fifteen days and pay a fine of one dollar and stand committed until the fine and costs are paid – from which Judgment the Defendant prays an appeal to the next Superior Court.

The State vs Alfred Booth} Ind’t. Jury Sworn: Wm Trice, John Hart, Thomas Holloway, George Allen, Israel Holt, Joseph Harder, Jacob Albright, James Faucett, Gilbert Strayhorn, William Pickett, Elisha Smith, James Strayhorn – find the Defendant not Guilty. On motion, Ordered that the prosecutor pay all the Costs of this prosecution.

In the Case of the State of North Carolina against John Stroud & others tried some Courts ago in Orange Superior Court, It is Ordered that the attendances of the Witnesses whose names are marked on the back of the Indictment be paid by the County Trustee.

Ordered that Mark Roberts pay to Delilah Rhew twenty seven pounds as follows, forty shillings down, five pounds on the 15th March next and five pounds annually thereafter until the whole is paid for the Support & maintenance of a child of which she has lately been delivered & of which he stands Charged according to Law as the reputed father. Thursday Morning 26th May 1814, Court met according to adjournment. Present: Samuel Child, Thomas Brewer, Thomas Whitted} esqrs.

Ordered that Catlet Campbell & Abner B Bruce be appointed Commissioner to Audit & Settle the Accounts of the Administration of John Luttrell dec’d and Report to next Court.

Ordered that Richard Thompson be appointed Guardian to Sally Nun, with Thomas Clancy & John Young his Securities in the sum of one thousand pounds.

On motion of John Breeze It is ordered that a male Slave of the said John Breeze by the name of Jacob no longer liable to the payment of Taxes, he being of no value.

Ordered that William Burnet a Boy of Color of the age Seven years 15th of next Month be bound to John McPherson until he arrives to lawful age to learn the art & mistery of a Cooper & farmer. [Bond not found.]

Administration on the Estate of James Pickard dec’d is granted to John Newlin and Reuben Smith who enters into bond with John Thompson their Sec’s in the Sum of £100.

Ordered that William Moore esqr, Nathaniel Newlin, John Woody & Samuel Woody be appointed Commissioners to lay off & allott to Catharine Pickard widow of James Pickard Dec’d one years Provision out of the Stock, Crop & provisions of Dec’d & report to next Court.

Whereas it appears to the Court that James Barracks has deserted his family and been absent for more than twelve Months & has left them without sufficient support, it is therefore Ordered that Hannah Barrack daughter of said James Barrack now of the age of four years 4th Nov’r last be bound to Mary Wilson until she arrive to lawful age to learn the art & mistery of a spinster. [Bond not found.]

Ordered that Polley Barrack daughter of James Barrack now of the age of Seven years 5th Nov’r next be bound to Robert McCrory until she arrives to lawful age to learn the art and mistery of a spinster. [Bond not found.]

Ordered that John Cash son of Nancy Cash now of the age of 18 years old in September next be bound to Eli McDaniel until he arrives to lawful age to learn the art & mistery of a farmer. [Bond not found.]

Ordered that Mary Whittaker daughter of Crecy Whittaker now of the age of three years old be bound to William Blackwood until she arrives to lawful age to learn the art & mistery of a Spinster. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 573.]

The Execution of a Deed from Samuel Turrentine to Robert Faucet was duly proved in open Court by the Oath of John Taylor a Subscribing Witness thereto & Ordered to be registered.

On Motion, Ordered that Daniel Crisco pay to Mary B Phifer the Sum of twenty Seven pounds, vizt twelve pounds immediately & five pounds annually thereafter until the whole is paid. [See Bastardy Bonds, images 1557, 1719, 1721, 1751.]

Ordered that Purnell Lingo son of Wm Lingo now of the age of ten years 15th Jan’y next, and Reeves Lingo Son of Wm Lingo of the age of 8 years 1st August next be bound to William McKee until he arrives to lawful age to learn the art & mistery of a farmer. [Bond not found. Reeves was soon re-bound at OCPQS 8/613.]

Ordered that Nancy Lingo daughter of William Lingo now of the age of eleven years 1st Sep’r next be bound to Joseph McCracken to learn the art & mistery of a Spinster. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 540. See also OCPQS 9/476.]

Ordered that William Ashley son of Fanny Ashley now of the age of 7 years 17th Feb last be bound to Henry Berry until he arrives to lawful age to learn the art & mistery of a farmer. [Bond not found.]

Ordered that Henry Thompson, Thomas Clancy and John Street are appointed a Committee to examine & audit the accounts of the Treasurer of Public Buildings and report to this Court.

John Taylor & James Allison are appointed a Committee to assist the Treasurer of Public Buildings to take care of the repairing the public Buildings.

Justices present, to wit: James Mebane, Jacob Moulder, Robert Graham, Henry Thompson, John Thompson, John Street, Chesley P Patterson, Thomas Whithed, Thomas Rountree, Thomas Brewer, Samuel Child, Matthew Durham, Thomas Clancy, Catlet Campbell, David Mebane, John Rhodes, Robert Tinnen, Willie Shaw, Joseph Clendening, Ezekiel Trice, John Craig, Abner B Bruce, John Cabe, Abram Craig, John Taylor, James S Smith, Robert Murray, David Allison, James Latta, Thomas Crompton.

On Motion, Ordered that a Bridge be built across Eno River at or near the Town of Hillsborough and that Doct James Webb, James S Smith, Thomas Clancy, Samuel Child and John Young be appointed a Comittee to contract for the Building of said Bridge and to maintaining the same for Seven years in good repair and that they take bond and sufficient Security from the Undertaker.

Ordered that Abner B Bruce, James Webb, Catlet Campbell are appointed a Committee to examine & Settle the accounts of John Young County Trustee & report to this court.

Ordered that nine pence on each poll, nine pence on each one hundred pounds Value of Town property and nine pence on each three hundred acres of Land for the purpose of building a Bridge across Eno River at Hillsboro.

Ordered that one Shilling be levied on each black poll & collected for the payment of Patrolls.

Ordered that a Tax of two Shillings & three pence on each poll, two Shillings & three pence on each hundred pounds Value of Town Property and two shillings & three pence on each three hundred acres of Land be levied & collected for the payment of County Contingencies.

Ordered that Josiah Turner Sheriff be allowed fifty pounds for his ex Officio Services during the last year.

Ordered that John Taylor Clerk of this Court be allowed fifty pounds for his ex Officio Services during last year.

James Whithed Register of the County of Orange County resigns his appointment as register of said County. Whereupon John McKerall is appointed Sheriff of said County and enters into Bond with Abner B Bruce & Catlet Campbell his Securities.

Josiah Turner is elected Sheriff of Orange County and enters into Bond with William Kirkland, William Whitted, James Child, Thomas Ruffin, John Taylor Senr.

John Young is elected County Trustee for the present year & enters into Bond with Josiah Turner, John Taylor, James Mebane, James Whithed his Sec’s.

Administration on the estate of Susannah Turner Dec’d late Wife of Josiah Turner is granted to Josiah Turner her late husband and he enters into Bond with William Whitted and James Smith Thomas Ruffin.

Administration on the Estate of Henry Stevens Dec’d is granted to Jane Stephens who enters into Bond with Reuben Smith her Sec’y in the Sum of £500.

Ordered that David Mebane esq, John White, David White and James White be & they are hereby appointed Commissioners to lay off to Jane Stevens widow of Henry Stevens Dec’d one years Provision out of the Crop, Stock & provisions of the Dec’d.

Administration on the Estate of Aquilla Crompton Dec’d is granted to Thomas Crompton who enters into Bond with Josiah Turner his Security in the Sum of £100.

Ordered that Peter a boy of Color the Son of Polley Copley a white Woman be bound to John Redmond until he arrives to lawful age, now aged 6 years, to learn him the art & mistery of a Hatter, and that said Redmond enter into Bond & Security for the delivery of the said Boy at the end of his apprenticeship. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 537, 542 & 544.]

The Execution of a Deed of Trust from Adam Dixon to James Webb was duly proved in open Court by the Oath of Thomas Ruffin a Subscribing Witness thereto and Ordered to be registered. [See ODB 14/638.]

The Execution of a Deed from James S Smith to Samuel Thompson was duly acknowledged in open Court by James S Smith the Subscriber thereto and Ordered to be registered. [See ODB 14/658.]
