Robert McEntire sworn to attend the Grand Jury.

Ordered that Roland Hews have leave to build a Mill on Haw River, the Seat being situate on his own Land which when built be come a public Mill. [Hughes assigned his interest in this land to William Mebane. See OFile 2031. The mill was near the north end of what is now Sellers Mill Road in Burlington, near the large island now called Goat Island.]

John Scott is appointed Overseer of the Road instead of Joseph Trice.

James Forrest is appointed Overseer of the Road in Stead of Joseph Tate.

Isaac Jackson is appointed Overseer of the Road (in the Room of Robert Neal) to Jacob Brantons.

John Cate is appointed Overseer of the Road instead of Thomas Cate from the Widow Moores to the five Miles post by Mortis’s.

Samuel McMullin is appointed Overseer of the Road in the Room of Jacob Marshall from the Widow Lindleys & Widow Lauglins Mill on Cane Creek to Whitehead Creek.

James Canada Collector for the District of Chatham is allowed Insolvents for 1568 Acres of Land & 12 Poles.

Ordered that an Orphan Child Polly [Mary Elliott] aged four years March next be bound to Alexander Carson untill she arrives to eighteen yrs of age. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 128.]

Ordered that Mary Patterson appear by the virtue of a Citation at this Term to Administer upon the Estate of her late husband Deceas’d or renounce the same.

Samuel Farris who had been lately confined in the public Goal of this County by virtue of a Case ad Satisfacieandum, for the Sum of twenty five Pounds, two Shillings & Costs, which Issued out of the Clerk’s Office from the said County at the Instance of John Sweeny vs the sd Farris having been closely confined for the space of

twenty Days & upwards, & having given due Notice to Jesse Benton Atto at Law for the said Sweeny his Intentions of taking Benefit of the Act of Assembly made for the Relief of Insolvent Debtors with respect to the Imprisonment of their Persons has come into Court & made Oath that he is not worth forty Shillings Sterling Money in any worldly Substance, either in Debts owing him or otherwise Whatever over & beside his wearing apparel, Working Tools & Arms of Mustering – that he ahs not at any time since his Imprisonment or before directly or indirectly sold assign’d or otherwise dispos’d off or made over in trust for himself or otherwise any part of his real or personal Estate whereby to have or expect any Benefit or profit to himself or to Defraud any of his Creditors to whom he is indebted – The Court therefore Orders that the said Farris be discharg’d from the said process.
