Jno Morrow is brought into Court & surrendered by his Henry Morrow his Bail in the Suit Case Jno Elliott against him who the Court directs into the Custody of the Shff.

Jno Mitchel is appointed Overseer of the road in the room of Isaac Jackson from [blank] to Jacob Brintons.

Wm Rhodes is appointed overseer of the road in the room of Lazarus Cates from.

Stephen Ward & Samuel Pike is appointed Overseer of the road in the room of Alex Underwood from Chatham County line on Cain Creek to Capt Perkinses.

James Robinson is appointed Overseer of the road from Capt Perkins muster ground to Guilford County line.

Nath’l Duke is appointed Overseer of the road from Chatham County line to the fork of the road on Honeygutts hill.

Administration of the Estate of Jno Campbell Dec’d is granted to Sam’l Campbell and enters into Bond with Wm Rogers Sec’y.

James Taylor is deemed sufficient security for Wm Strudwick to keep the parish indemnifyd by reason of a child begotten on the body of [blank]. [William’s father Samuel Strudwick was the largest landowner in Orange County, and William was soon a State Senator and member of the US House – so it is perhaps not surprising that much of the paperwork related to this illegitimate child is missing. Jean B Anderson has speculated that the child was James S Smith of Smith Level Road. See Proud Shoes by Pauli Murray.]

Sam’l? Umstead files a petition for building a mill across flatt river ow[n]ing Land on one side of the said river. Ordered that Wm Laws, George Laws, Geo Guess & Wm Roberts with the County Surveyor attend on the premises & lay off & value one acre of Land of the petitioners, one acre of Land on the opposit side the property of Archibald Harris & make report thereof to the next Court & that a Summons issue to Archibald Harris according to Law. Ordered that George Brown a Base begotten Child now of the age of 4 years the 28th day of October next until he arrive to full age, to learn the art & mistery of a Farmer. [sic, i.e. lacking the name of the person to whom the child was bound. Bond not found.]

Administration of the Estate of Charles Roberts Dec’d is granted to Wm Roberts who enters into Bond with [blank] Securities in the sum of £[blank] 2.16.6  [See also perishable property to be sold OCPQS 4/169.]

Ordered that Jno Walker Esq be allow’d £50 for monies expended with? by him about the Bridge Over Enoe at or near the Town ford.

Ordered that Jno Walker be allowed be allowed £30 for monies paid by him to Samuel Benton for his Ex officio services for as Clk for the year 1785.

Ordered that Jno Walker Esq be allowed £40.18.6 for monies advanced to Sudrie for the Repairing the Court House and Goal for the District of Hillsbo. & that the Commissioners for repairing the Court House aforesaid pay the same agreable to an Act of Assembly pas’d at Tarborough.

Ordered that Jno Walker be allowed £7.16.8 for monies advance to James Freeland as Shff.

Ordered that Jno Walker esq be allow’d 5 p Ct for all monies he has hereto fire rec’d & accounted for.

Ordered that the Auditors for settling the County Acco destroy the all Vouchers delivered in & settled.

22. James Lambert vs John Allison} detinue, Plea of non detenet. Jurors Sworn as to No 27 & find for the that the Defendant does detain the Negroe Judah & his issue & assess the Plaintiffs Damages to £350 to be discharged by the delivery of Judah & her issue & Payment of Costs, The Plaintiff by his atto Releases £150 of the above Recovery. Absalom Tatom, Wm Lytle & Dav’d Ray is appointed to assess the Taxable property within the Town of Hillsbo for the present year.

James Taylor is allow’d Sixteen pounds 8/ for his attendance as Constable Previous to this Term amounting in the whole to 41 days.

John Armstrong Collector for the District of Hillsbo exhibits his List of Insolvents for the year 1787 Containing 23931 Acres of land lying Westward & ten poles & 5174 acres of Land  & 53 Sup??? ???mony Polls which is allowed by the Court.

Wm Whithead, Ro Ferguson & Henry Terrel are appointed patrollers for the Town of Hillsbo.

John G Rencher is allowed Four pounds eight shillings for his attendance as a Constable at May & August Terms 1788 Amounting in the whole to 11/1 d???

The Court lays a County Tax of two Shillings on every Poll & eight pence for each hundred acres of Land & each hundred Pounds worth of taxable Property in Town for the year 1788, to be collected according to Law.

John Allison who is appointed Register for this County of and given Bond & Sec according to Law takes the Oaths appointed by Law for his Qualification.

Court adjourns til Court in Course.
