Wm Trousdale Constable Sworn to attend the Grand Jury this Term.

Administration of the estate of George Sharp dec’d is granted to Aaron Sharp, who gives Security according to Law.

James Woody is appointed Guardian to ??? Woody, Robert Woody, Lewis Woody, & Mary Woody, orphans of Ro Woody Dec’d. [See also administration OCPQS 4/6, inventory OCPQS 4/14.]

Page Patterson, orphan of [blank] Patterson, comes into Court & chooses Benj Yeargan his Guardian, in the room of Mark Patterson.

The Reverand Jacob Lake Guardian of Soloman & Stephen Debow, orphans of the late Rev’d John Debow, comes into Court & relinquishes his Guardianship, upon which Rob Scoby is appointed Guardian

[cont’d] to the said Soloman & Stephen. Ordered that Alex’r Mebane & James Freeland esqr be appointed to settle & revise the acco of the Guardianship of the said Rev’d Jacob Lake & to put into the possession of the said Rob’t the estate of the said orphans. [Robert Scoby married the widow Lucy Debow, becoming the stepfather of the Debow boys, but was apparently viewed with some suspicion by some parts of the Debow family. See OCPQS 5/95 for a discussion of the ensuing drama.]

Lewis Jones is appointed Guardian to Sam’l Wilson, Greggory Wilson & Mary Wilson orphans of Wm Wilson Dec’d. [See also guardianship OCPQS 5/123, OCPQS 5/181, accounting OCPQS 4/537, OCPQS 5/301 & OCPQS 5/307.]

Nathan Wells & James Robinson are appointed overseers of the road from Guilford County line to Chatham line.

Wm Andrews is appointed overseer of the road from Wooddies ferry to Chatham County line in the room of James Newland.

John Caine is appointed overseer of the road from Wm Cains to Jacob Brantons in the room of John Latta.

Caleb Harvey is appointed overseer of the road from the South side of Little River to Hillsbo on the road from Hillsbo to Pains Tavern.

James R Whitney is appointed Overseer of the Road from the South fork of little river to Hillsbo on Persons road in the room of James Wilson.

John Hackney is appointed overseer of the road from Whitheads Creek to Lindleys old mill.

Joseph Stalsworth is appointed Overseer of the road from James Tinnens to Woodys ferry in the room of John Graham.

The execution of the last Will & Testament of Stephen Tatom was proved in open Court by the oath of William Tatom one of the Subscribing Witnesses thereto. Ordered that a Spa issue to Granville Commanding Fowler Jones the other Subscribing Witness to appear at our County Court of Pleas &c to be held on the 4th Monday of August next in Order to prove the said Will & make the probate thereof Compleat, that the same may be admited to probate Record agreable to Law.

Ordered that Francis Croker & Margaret Croker orphans of Francis Croker Dec’d be bound to John Tate until they arrive to full age. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 106 which is the bond for Francis only who is identified as 3 years old.]

Ordered that James Pratt an orphan child aged 2 years next August be bound to Henry Hasting Sr to learn the art and mistery of a Farmer. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 112.]

The Governor vs Wm Willis Shff of Bladen & Wm M Rankin, Tho Brown Dec, Lindsey White & Isaac Jones} for arrearage of Taxes. Judgment according to Bond – fill for Eight hundred & Sixty nine pounds 9/8 which may be discharged with the paym of £706.8.9 in Money & 163.1.6 in Certificates & Costs. Ca Sa issued to August 1792.

Same vs The Representatives of John Campbell late Shff of Cumberland County & James Moore, Malcom McNiel, Ebeneasor Totson, John Campbell, James Campbell & Wm Ranode?} for arrearages of Taxes. Judgm’t according to Bond for to be discharged with the pam’t £1222.13.3 ½ in money & 1023.0.0 ¾ in Certificates & Costs.

Same vs Peter Mallett Exr of James Emant? Dec’d late Shff of Cumberland & Henry Lightfoot esqr and Sec’s – for arrearages of Taxes. Judgm’t according to Bond for £1317.5.5 to be disch’d with the paym’t of £618.3.0 in money & £699.3.6 in Certificates & Costs. F F issued to Aug 1792. Peter Mallett confess’d by Wm Nash his Atto asset to the amo of £618.0.0 in Certificates.

Ordered that George Lynch be bound to Mary Lynch until he arrives to full age, the said George of the age Ten years. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 108.]

Thomas Bird is appointed overseer of the road from the County line to Buckhorn Creek in the room of James Forrest.

Ordered that John Donally be exempt from the payment of a poll Tax.

Ordered that James McDade an orphan boy of the age of Thirteen years be bound to John Shy to learn the art & mistery of a Hatter until he arrive at full age. [Bond not found. James was re-bound at OCPQS 4/245.]

Edw’d Picket is appointed overseer of the road from Wm Morrow’s Mill

Wm Morrow is appointed overseer of the road.

Ezekil Trice is appointed overseer of the road from William Coplands to the Chatham line with the hands that formerly belonged to the same) in the room of Ste??? of John Scott.

Thomas Phillips & Henery Massey administrators of J?? Blake Dec’d presented their accounts & Vouchers respecting their said administration, to be examined & admitted to record; Ordered that the said accounts & Vouchers be refered to Tignal Jones & John Humphreys esq to be by them Examined & reported to the next Court. [OCPQS 4/205 - May 1789]

Ordered that Elizabeth King an orphan child the age of eight years 19th July 89 & John King an orphan aged 5 years be bound to John Harvey until they arrive to full age. [Bond not found.]

Allen George is excus’d from the payment of the poll tax.

Tho Reding is appointed overseer of the road in the room of Stephen Carrel from Bowling to New hope with the hands belonging to the said Road.

Ordered that the Collector remit the Tax of John Shy on Three hundred & fifty acres of Land he being being overtax’d through mistake to the sum of the Tax on with that quantity of Land.

John Taylor is appointed to receive the List of Taxables for the Town & district of Hillsbo for the present year.

Jonathan Lindley is appointed to receive the List of Taxes for the District of Caswell for the present year.

John Sloss is appointed Collector to receive the List of Taxes in the District of Chatham for the present year.

Wm Nunn is appointed to receive the List of Taxes for the District of St Thomas’s for the present year.

Alex Mebane is appointed to receive the List of Taxes for the District of Orange for the present year.

Tho H Perkins is appointed to receive the List of Taxes for the District of St Asaph for the present year.

Ro Campbell is appointed to receive the List of Taxes for the District of St Mark for the present year.

Wm Ansley is appointed to receive the List of Taxes for the District of St Marys for the present year.

William Morrow Munrow is appointed overseer of the road from Morrows mill to Collins’s instead of Edward Picket.

Ezekael Trice is appointed overseer of the road in the room of John Scott from Wm Copland to Chatham line.

William McCauley esq is appointed elected Sheriff for the County of Orange.

Sam’l Dannel vs Ro Campbell esq} Case. Jury sworn, to Wit: John Carter, James Newland, Dan’l Freeman, Joseph Hodge, Nicholas Harden, Geo Hodge, Wm Clark, Ro Scoby, Hugh Findley, Alexander McKee, Stephen Loyd, Hugh Cain - find for the plaintiff £14.9.0 ½ & Costs.

Robert? Hunter is Exempted from attending as a Juror this Term.

John Allison vs Wm Newman} Case. Jury sworn, to wit: Arch’d Campbell, Ro Nelson, Wm Galbreath, James Patterson, Allen Rhodes, Tho Watts, John Murray, Tho Wilson, John Bowls, Benj Yeargan, Wm Gorden, John Davis. Non pross.

The Wardens of the poor vs John Armstrong & Moses Crawford former wardens} The same Jury as in No 2 sworn & assess the Damages to £94.7.1 & Costs of Suit.

NB Any Just claims that may hereafter appear is to be allow’d in this Judgment.

Ordered that the following rates be established as ferry Rates in the County of Orange & that the ferry men & proprietors of Ferrys receive the following sums & no other for the services ??nnead, to Wit:

8. John Murray by Exr vs Walter Morrow} Slander. Same Jury as to No 2 sworn, find for the Defendant.

On motion, Ordered that an Execution which issued from the last County Court in favour of Wm Whithead Sr against the ?? Josiah Walls Dec’d Exrs returnable to the present Term be set aside

John G Rencher one of the Exrs of Josiah Watts Dec’d suggests to this Court that John Nichols esq Shff of this County detains from him £55 or thereabouts which he also Suggests belongs to Josiah Watt’s Exrs and that the said Sheriff withholds it to pay an Ex?? Wm Whithead Sr vs said estate, and the said Exr also alledges that prior Judgments & Ex’ns were in his hand on said estate, which he things ought to be first Satisfied. On motion therefore of said Ex’r that said Whithead Judgment was unlawfull because as Sec’t an made known to him concerning the matter and ??

???ons offered that said Whithead Judgmn’t & Ex’n be set aside and that the said £55 or thereabouts be paid by said Shff to said Exr. The court after due Consideration adjudges the said Ex’r take nothing by his motion.

Ordered that John the Slave of Wm Hooper esq be allow’d to carry a gun on his masters own Plantation & Land at the same time Jesse Benton entered into Bond according to Law.

Ordered that Wm Cabe who is the Reputed father of a child begoten on the body of Jinne Latta [blank] [Bastardy Bonds, image 449, also OCPQS 4/209.]

13. Tho Farmer vs John Allison} Case. Same Jury as to No 12 sworn - find for the plaintiff £7.4.17 & Costs.

9. Zachariah Harmon vs John Stroud} Debt. Jury sworn, to wit: Dav’d Mebane, Tho Watts, John Davis, Armor King, Wm Galbreath, Joseph Dickson, Sam’l Allen, Wm Gorden, Wm Clark, Wm Whithead, Frederick Loyd, Wm Newman - find for the plaintiff £38.2.0 & Costs.

[OCPQS 4/211 - May 1789]

William McCabe being charged on oath by Jean Latta of having begotten a base born Female child, born of the Body of said Jean Latta on the 23d day of April 1789, on motion by the said Jean Latta by Jesse Benton her Attorney, for an allowance to be made her for maintainging [sic] of said child & that the said William McCabe enter into Bond and Security to perform the order of the Court concerning the premise and to keep County indemnified &c, Ordered therefore that the said William McCabe pay unto the said Jean Latta the sum of Forty eight pounds current money, this to say at the rad of Eight pounds per annum in half yearly payments for her care & trouble in raising and maintaining said child, To wit ten pounds current money to be recovered by her at the end of every half year, & this [Bond?] not to be void upon the first or any other recovery until the whole sum of £48 shall be recovered, But it is further the Judgment and order of the Court that in case the said child or the said Jean Lattay should either of them die before the said child arrives to the age of six years, that then the said payments or demands in consequence of this order to cease from the time of such death. John Bowls et Ux vs Mich’l Carrel} Slander. Same Jury sworn as in No 12 except Andrew Murdock in the room of John Bowls - find for the Defendant.

[OCPQS 4/212 - May 1789]

On motion of Wm Hooper esq by Jesse Benton his Atto that the said Wm Hoopers Negroe a Slave, called John be allowed by this County to hunt with & carry a gun on the said Wm Hoopers plantation and Tract of Land Situate on or near Enoe, about two miles below Hillsbo, for the purpose of preserving the said Wm Hoopers Stock & to kill game for his family, Ordered that the said negroe John be allowed to carry a Gun on his masters Land, agreable to the said motion.

7. The State vs Henry Morris} Ind’t assault. Jury sworn, to wit: James Patterson, Thomas Cates, Wm Willie, Wm Willis, Nicholas Davis, Martin Parmer, Thomas Watts, Jno Steel, James Bauldridge, Ro Furguson, Jno White, Jno Nichols - find for the Defendant Guilty a charged in the Bill of Ind’t.

Licence is granted Wm McCauley to keep a Tavern at his dwelling house in in [sic] Hillsbo.

Wm Cumming is appointed Constable for the Town of Hillsbo.

John G Rencher is allowed Two pounds for his attendance at this Term 5 days as Constable.

Ordered that the Sheriff summon for the future the Constable to attend the Sup Court of this District & two to attend the County Court & no ?? of that the ???? of the 2nd Constables be entered of R????.

Ordered that John Nichols esq late Shff be allow’d £25 for his ex officio services for one year past, that is to say from May 88 to May 89.
