At a County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions begun & held for the County of Orange at the Court house in Hillsbo on the 4th Monday of Nov A Dom 1789 and in the 14th Year of our Independence. Present: Jno Ray, Ro Campbell, Jno Taylor} Esqrs.

The Sheriff returns the Venire facias Executed, to Wit: Henry Haistings Sr, Tho Baker, Tho Trice, Jno Rhodes, James Hutchins, Wm Malion, Roger Dannel, Patterson Dannel, Ro Scoby, Dav’d Scoby, Dav’d Mebane, Andrew Murdock, Jo Baker, James Patterson, James Robinson, Geo Johnston, Ro Thompson, Edw’d Gwinn, Isaac Bracken, Tho Love, Wm Faucet, Frederick Taylor, Jno Davis, Dav’d Allison, Jno Wood, Ro Grey, Andrew Griffin, Jno Riley, Geo Long, Jno Mitchel, Enuch Collins, Samuel Thompson, Dav’d Lapsley, Jno Moore, Jno Douglass, Henry Thompson.

Tho Trice, Patterson Dannel, Dav’d Mebane, Jno Riley, Jno Douglass & Jno Moore are Excused from attending as Jurors at this Term.

The Grand Jury impanneld & Sworn, to Wit: James Patterson F[oreman], Wm Fosset, Dav’d Lapslie, Jno Davis, Dav’d Scoby, Henry Thompson, Geo Long, Ro Thompson, Frederick Taylor, Tho Love, James Hutchins, Ro Grey, Jno Rhodes, Andrew Griffin, Geo Johnston.

Wm Hall sworn as Constable to attend the Grand Jury this Term.

Remaining Jurors of the Original pannel: Henry Haisting Sr, Thomas Baker, Wm Malcom, Roger Dannel, Rob Scoby, Andrew Murdock, James Robinson, Edw’d Gwinn, Isaac Bracken, Dav’d Allison, Jno Wood, Jno Mitchel, Enuch Collins, Samuel Thompson.

Ro Gray is appointed Guardian to Jno Murdock & the said Robert enters into Bond with Jno ???? and Andrew Griffin Sec’ys in the sum of £200 for the due discharge of their his Guardian Ship.

Ordered that Letters of Administration be Granted to Catherine Patten Widow of Thomas Patten, and entered into Bond with Ro Patten & Jno Patten Sec’ys in the sum of Five hundred pounds. [See also guardianship OCPQS 4/293 & OCPQS 4/294.]

[OCPQS 4/243 - Nov 1789]

Ordered that Geo Fosset be excused for not attending as a Juror last Court.

Ordered that the Sheriff expose to Sale the house & Lott of Andrew Brooks in the Town of Hillsbo taken at the Instance of of [sic] Peter N Williamson to satisfy the sum of £14.9.6 with Interest &c & Costs.

Ordered that the Sheriff expose to Sale the House & Lott of Andrew Brook in the Town of Hillsbo levied on by Execution from under the hand of Justice to satisfy Alex Boreland the sum £3.0.6 with Interest & Costs.

Joseph Holms is appointed overseer of the road from Hunters ford on Haw river to the six mil branch.

Ordered that Simon Buckhanon an orphan boy aged 12 Years last March be bound to James Dablin  [Deblin] til he arrives to the age of Twenty one Years to learn the art & mistery of a Cooper. [See Apprentice Bonds, images 95 & 104 which is endorsed on back and says it is returned because the master is dead; bond calls him Simon Buckham or Beckham. See also OCPQS 4/294.]

Tuesday Morning 10 O’Clock 24th Nov 1789, Court met according to Adjournment. Present: Jno Walker, Ro Campbell, James Carson} Esqrs.

14. Andrew Patterson assignee &c vs Jno Elliott Esqr} Case. Jury sworn, to Wit: Henry Hastings, Thos Baker, Will’m Malcom, Roger Daniel, Robert Scoby, Andrew Murdock, David Allison, John Mitchel, Enoch Collins, Sam’l Thompson, David Gilson, Joseph Stalsworth. Find a verdict for the Plaintiff and assess his damages to £30.14.4 & Costs of Suit.

Ordered that James Walker pay unto Ann Horton Twenty five pounds for the maintenance of a Bastard child four pounds to be paid three months from the date hereof, four pounds & one crown to be paid the next ensuing nine months, four pounds every year afterwards untill the Twenty five pounds be all paid up. Fine paid 25/ [See Bastardy Bonds, images 450 & 458, also OCPQS 4/315, OCPQS 4/383 & OCPQS 4/424.]

[OCPQS 4/245 - Nov 1789]

Dav’d Gilston is appointed Overseer of the road from Col Wm Shepperds to Hillsbo in the room of Jno Riley.

Riley Vickers is appointed Overseer of the road from the Cross Rhodes to Wm Rhodes in the room of Benjamin Peelor.

Ordered that Jno Young, Orphan of Joseph Young be removed from under the Guardian ship of his mother and be placed under the Guardianship of James Haisting who enters into Bond with Henry Haisting and Wm Haisting Securities in the sum of Five hundred pounds for the due discharge of his Guardianship.

Dav’d Ross & Co vs Tho Farmer} Debt. Same Jury as to No 14 Sworn. Find for the plaintiff £42.8.2 ½ & Costs.

Edward Couch is appointed Overseer of the road from dry Creek to the east of New hope, to the fork of the road. Ordered that the following hands work on the same: Jno Moore, Joseph Bilbow, Wm Wills Green, Geo Dannel, Wm H?????n, Philip Allen, Roze Allen Sears, Joseph Harwood Sr, Grey Boothe, Zachariah Bevil & Rich’d Davis.

State vs Abner Tapp} Ind. Jury sworn, to Wit: Henry Haisting, Tho Baker, Wm Marcom, Roger Dannel, Rob Scoby, Andrew Murdock, Dav’d Allison, Jno Mitchel, Enuch Collins, Samuel Thompson, Jno Ray, Joseph Thompson. Find the Defendant Guilty as charg’d in the Indictment.

State vs James Williams} Ind’t. Same Jury as to No [blank] Sworn & finds the Defendant not Guilty.

Jno Shy to whom an orphan child was bound called James McDade [OCPQS 4/202], comes into Court and relinquishes his claim to the said apprentice & Servant and is thereon released by the Court. On Motion, ordered that the said orphan be bound to Tho Watts

Ordered that Wm Kenneday Sheriff of [blank] County be fin’d £50 for failure to return a Writ of V Epo? To this Court as directed.

Ordered that the Sheriff of Orange expose to Sale a House & Lott in the Town of Hillsbo of the property of Andrew Brooks to satisfy an Execution from under the hand of a Justice at the Instance of Jno Elliott for £11.4.9 & Costs.

A Paper writing purporting to be the last Will & Testament of John Nance [or John Vance?] dec’d was exhibited to this Court by Maj’r Geo Doherty at the same time said Geo Doherty & Doct John Umstead the Executors therein named were requested to qualify and take upon them the Execution of said Will or otherwise refuse the same and the said Geo Doherty & Jno Umstead in open Court refuses the said Executorship. [No Vance or Nance wills found in OWB.]
