Wm Andrews Constable sworn to attend the Grand Jury this
Term.
Sam’l Whitset is appointed overseer of the road from the
fork of Boring road to Faucets Mills in the room of Philip Walker.

Ordered that James Carson esqr be excused from the payment
of a one poll tax for in the present Collection of Public taxes, he
having been overcharged one poll.
License is Granted to Barnebas Grimes to keep a Tavern at
His dwelling House in the Court of Orange. He entered Bond with Wm Newman.
Licence is Granted Wm Newman to keep a tavern at his
dwelling House in the Town of Hillsbo.
John Mangom comes into Court and chooses Thomas Wilkinson his
Guardian who enters into Bond with James Patterson Sec’y in the sum of Fifty
Pounds.
Richard Williams is appointed overseer of the road from the
South fork of Little river to the town of Hillsbo in the room of James M
Whitney, ordered that the usual hand work on the same.
License is Granted Theo Thompson to keep a tavern at his
dwelling house where no now lives and entered into Bond with John Kelley &
Sterling Harris his Sec’s accordingly.
Sarah Patten & Isaac Patten orphans of Thomas Patten
comes into Court and choose Catherine Patten their mother Gua their
Guardian who enters into Bond with John Patten & [blank] Sec’ys in the sum

[OCPQS 4/296 - Aug 1790]
Catherine Patten is appointed Guardian for orphan child called
Thomas Patten orphan of Thomas Patten dec’d and the said Catherine entered into
Bond and with John Patten & Sec’y’s in the sum of one hundred
pounds. [See also administration OCPQS 4/240, guardianship OCPQS 4/293.]
Ordered that Simon Beckam an orphan boy who was bound to
Jacob Deblin at last Nov’r Term [OCPQS 4/241] and then of the age of twelve
years the May preceeding be bound to John Thompson to learn the art &
mistery of Cooper, the said Deblin his former master being having lately
died. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 104 & 169.]
James Whitsides Orphan of James Whitsides Dec’d coming into
Court and Chooses Empson Bird his Guardian, who enters into Bond in the sum of
eighty pounds. [See also administration OCPQS 4/164, perishable property to be
sold OCPQS 4/173.]
Catherine Whitsides orphan of James Whitsides dec’d comes
into Court and chooses Empson Bird her Guardian who enters into Bond in the sum
of eighty pounds accordingly.
Empson Bird is appointed Guardian for S?? Whitsides orph of
James Whitsides dec’d and the said Empson enters into Bond in the Sec’y in the
sum of eighty pounds.
John Whitsides orph of James Whitsides comes into Court and
chooses James Jno Stockard his Guardian who entered into Bond in the sum
of eighty pounds with Empson Bird [his security].

Irane Carrel an orphan Girl child of the age of Seven years
June last is bound to Edward Trice Sr until she arrives to Lawful age. [See

Tuesday morning 9 o’Clock 24th August 1790, Court
met according to adjournment. Present: Alex Mebane, Jno Taylor, James Carson,

James Willis is exempt from the payment of a poll tax by
reason of his bodily infirmity.
Tobias Stalcup is appointed overseer of the road in room of
Hugh McAdams from Trolingers ford on Haw River to Back Creek.
Jacob Albright is appointed overseer of the road from
Mallachi Foglemans branch to Honeycuts Hill.
James Moore is appointed overseer of the road from Cain
Creek ford to the Meadow meeting House in the room of James Ball, ordered that
the following Hands work on the same under him: James Pickard, Henry Pickard,
Tho King, Jno Carrigan, Jinning Gibson, Jno Pickerd, Wm Grimes, Isaac Doyle,

Joseph Cantrel and Mary Cantrel Exrs vs Catharine Cantrel,
Mary Cantrel, Milley Cantrel infants by Jse? Shy ??? ??? A paper writing
purporting to be the last will and testament of Jacob Cantrel dec’d being ?????
to this Court for Probate and the same takes argument and examination of
witnesses ???? to be revok’d. The Court doth therefore ??? [decline?] to admit
the same to probate.
A paper writing purporting to be the last will and testament
of Arthur Mangom on was is offered to this Court by John Carringtons Exr
& ???? ?? ???? ???? for their opinion whether the same be a legal will or
not, the Court after having assigned Wm Mangom who is present Guardian take
care of the Interest of Arthur and Willie & Christianna Mangom
orphans of Arthur Mangom Dec’d which orphans who are under the age of
twenty one years, It is the Give out as their opinion of the Case
that the same is not a legal Will.
Administration of the estate of Francis Decerne is Granted
to Lucy Decerne the older, ordered that she Give bond accordingly to the Clerk
out of Court.

Isaac Dorris is appointed Constable for the District of
Chatham in the room of James Bowers entered into Bond with Sec’y & took the
oath of office.
It appearing to the Court that Joseph Laws is tax’d with 390
acres of Land over and above when he only ought to be tax’d with 270,
Ordered that the Collector release it the tax on 80 acres of Land for
the year 1789.
Whereas it appearing to this Court that the List of Taxables
taken in by Jno Sloss esqr in the District is either Lost or mislaid [blank]

Jonathan Nichols, Richard Cate, Ro Scoby, Wm Jackson, James Niel, Sam’l
Chambers - find for the plaintiff one penney and the costs of Suit.

Administration of the estate of John Dunkin dec’d is Granted
to Robert Dunkin his brother and whereupon the said Robert entered into Bond
with Wm McCauley esqr & [blank] Sec’ys in the sum of £500.
Hannah Thomas is appointed Guardian to Jesse Thomas, Kesiah
Thomas and Moris? orphans of Edw’d Thomas and she enter into Bond with [blank]
Sec’ys in the sum of £200. [See also administration OCPQS 4/279.]
Jno Willis indorsee &c vs Wm McAdams} Jury sworn, to Wit:
Wm Morrow, James Deserne, Nicholas Hardin, James Trousdale, Wm Whithead, Wm
Manor, Joseph Baker, Benjamin Yeargan, Abram Allen, Brice Collins, Isaac
Dorris, Tho Tate. The Witness Mordaci Richard be called upon a Su[b]p[oen]a and
fail’d to appear whereupon he is fined by the court agreable to act of
assembly. Plaintiff call’d & non Suited. Sci fa is’d to Nov 90.

Alexander Kirkpatrick is appointed overseer of the road in
the room of Richard Gott from Shaws to Haw River.
Ephraim Cook is appointed overseer of the road from Col
Oneals to Trolingers ford in the room of Wm Davis.
10. Wm Picket vs Jno Stroud} Debt. Same Jury as in No 7
Sworn, find for the plaintiff for £41 £35.10 & Costs.
Ordered that the Shff reimburse James Hogg in the sum of ten
pounds which he the said James Lent to the use of the district as Per Voucher.
11. Robert Ferguson et Ux vs Jno Taylor} Case. Same Jury as
in No 7 Sworn, find a verdict for the Plffs £101.5.4 costs. Appeal prayed &
granted to the Defendant.

Ordered that the following hands work on the road under
James Moore, to Wit: James Roark, Wm Roark, James Turrentine, James Watson, Jno
Moore, Morgan Clower, Alexander McMullen, Hugh McMullen, Wm Miller, Tho Horton,
Henry Moore, James Horton, Wm Duke, Jno Crouse, Nath’l Carrington, Ro Forsithe.
Ordered that Henry O’Daniel serve as an overseer for the
repair of the road from Elinor Moors to James Tinnins in the place of Barney
Lasley.
Ordered that a Certiorari issue directed to William Jamison,
John Ray Esqr and Wm Hall Constable to bring up the proceedings on a Warrant
William Jamison vs Robert Berry on which Judgment hath passed before John Ray
Esqr and that all proceedings before be stoped untill the matter be heard by
the Court.
Order’d the following persons be summon’d as a Jury to turn
the Road from Sam’l Pattons plantation, to wit: Jno Walker stiller, Jno

James Niel, James Trousdale - find for the plaintiff £12.1.0 & Costs.
Thomas Couch is appointed overseer of the road from Wm
Rhodes to the fork of the road near Gilbert Strayhorns in the room of James
Strayhorn.

Thomas Farmer vs Jno Taylor} Debt. Same Jury as in No 12
Sworn - find for the plaintiff £3.5.8 & Costs.
It appearing to this Court that Wm Rhodes is over charged in
his taxes on to the amount of the tax of one Hundred acres of Land, Ordered
therefore that the Collector forbear to collect the tax so over charged on the
said one Hundred acres.

district of Orange.

Whitheads Creek to Lindleys old mill in the room of Jno Hackney.
A petition being exhibited to this Court for the re[view]ing

Ordered therefore that the said order be recinded and the said road, as laid
off, be thrown out.
