At a County Court of Pleas & quarter Sessions begun & held for the County of Orange in Hillsborough on the 22nd day of August, being the 4th Monday in said month & year 1791. Present: Sterling Harris, Nicholas Gibbs, Wm Strudwick} Esqrs.

On Motion, Ordered that an orphan child named Nancy Acors of the age of ten years in November last be bound to Charles Wilson in to learn the art of a Spinstress and that she remain with him until she arrive to the age of eighteen. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 153.]

On Motion, Ordered that an orphan Girl child called & known by the name of Mary Elliott of the age of 7 years last March [OCPQS 4/51] be bound to Margaret Carson to learn the art of a Spinstress until she arrive to Lawful age. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 151.]

On motion, Ordered that an orphan boy called & known by the name of Michael Tumey? of the age of Seven years the 10th Inst be bound to James Doherty to learn the art of a weaver until he arrive to Lawful age. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 159 which gives his name as Michael Tirmoy.]

Anderson Douglass & James Douglass orphans of David Douglass Dec’d come into Court & chooses Martha Douglass their Mother their Guardian. Ordered that the said Martha enter into Bond accordingly in the sum of £100 each. [See also administration OCPQS 4/339.]

The Grand Jury impanneled & Sworn, to Wit: Rob’t Tinnen fourman, Anthony Doherty, Jno Rhodes, Wm Alliburton, James Mitchel, Nicholas Davis, James Allison, Jno Woods, Jesse Miller, Jno Edwards, George Fosset, Empson Bird, Sam’l Chambers, Tho Baker, Joseph Fennel.

Reuben Smith quallified as Constable to attend the Grand Jury this Term.

License is Granted Jno Taylor esqr to keep a Tavern at his dwelling House in Hillsbo, ordered that he enter into Bond with Sec’y accordingly.

License is Granted to Jno Belvin to keep a a [sic] Tavern at his dwelling House. Ordered that he enter into Bond with Sec’y according to Law.

On motion, Ordered that Samuel Campbell an orphan boy of the age of fourteen years be bound to Wm Bauldwin until he arrive to Lawful age to learn the art & mistery of a black smith. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 155.]

The Execution of a Deed from John Nichols to John Barbee Jr was duly proved in open Court by the Oath of Wm Jenkins one of the Subscribing witnesses thereto and Ordered to be Registered. [See ODB 4/501.]

The Execution of a Deed from John Taylor to Jehu Whitted was duly proved in open Court by the Oath of Wm Whitted one of the Subscribing Witnesses thereto and Ordered to be Registered. [See ODB 4/493.]

Tuesday morning ten o’clock 23d Aug’t 1791, Court met according to adjournment. Present: Alexander Mebane, Wm Lytle, Andrew Murdock} Esqrs.

Tignal Jones one of the persons with Jno Humphries appointed by this Court [OCPQS 4/202] to examine the acco’s between Henry Massey adm’r of Benjamin Blake Dec’d & Jones ??y and also between Tho Philips admr of said Benjamin & Jones comes into court & makes the report & files the acco’s from it as respecting the same. [See also accounting OCPQS 4/202, accounting OCPQS 4/536.]

Francis Baldridge, Tho Gwinn, Abraham Anderson, James Currey, James Haisting & Jo Thompson are fined Ni Si agreable to act of assembly for not attending as Jurors at this Term.

Jno Long and David Ray are excused from their attendance as Jurors at this Term for reasons shewn the Court.

Jno Edwards is appointed overseer of the road from the newbern road to Ellerbees Creek. Ordered that the following hands work under him on the same: Jno Hall, Jno Mitchum, Wm Pool, Wm McDonnald, John Allen, Wm Manes, Abraham Anderson, Joseph Cook.

Jno Hughs is appointed Overseer of the road from Alex Mebanes to Jno Walkers in the room of Wm Strudwick esq, ordered that he keep the same in good repair with the usual hands.

Joshua Horne is appointed overseer of the road from Wm Rhodes to the fork of the road near Gilbert Strayhorns in the room of Tho Couch.

On Motion, ordered that Jno Dixon an orphan boy of the age of eight years February last be bound to Jno Weaznor, Brice Collins to whom the said boy was formerly bound [OCPQS 4/104] being dead. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 157.]

Administration of the estate of Stephen Smith dec’d is Granted to Wm Ansley esq the right of said administration being relinquished by Joshua Smith the legal representative of the said Dec’d.

Jno McCulloch is appointed overseer of the road from Caswell line to James Clarks in the room of James Allison with the following hands: James Allison, Jo Allison, Jno Breeze, Jno Allison, Charles Allison, James Clark, And McBroom, Hamilton Allison, Wm Holling?, Benj Whit????, Joseph Armstrong.

Administration of the estate of Jno Bowls is Granted to Jno Weams?, ordered that he enter into Bond according to Law in the sum of £100.

Andrew McBroom is appointed constable in the District of Hillsbo. Ordered that he enter into Bond accordingly.

Administration of the estate of Jno Fuller Jr is granted to Jno Fuller Sr who enter into Bond with Wm Galbreath in the sum of £100.

Jesse Embrie vs Henry Thompson} Covenant. Jury sworn, to Wit: Philip Walker, Richard Faucit, Christopher Barbee, Tho Watts Tobias Stalcup, Shaderick Forrister, Jehu Whithead, Theo Thompson, Wm Jackson, Dan’l Wasson, Tho Rountree, David Scoby, Jno Thompson - find for the plaintiff £167.10.0 with Int from the 18th January 1789 til this day & costs.

Ordered that Jno Hoge a base born boy of age of ten years the 4th day of March the 4th next be bound to Abraham Davis to learn the art and mistery of a black Smith. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 161 which appears to give the name as John Hague.]

12. Wm Courtney vs Peter V Williamson} Jury sworn, to Wit: Frederick Taylor, Thos Mulholland, Jno Davis, Geo Horner, Zacheus Tate, Enuch Collins, Walter Alves, Isaac Dorris, Jno Railey, Henry Mason, Wm Bradford, Richard Bull - find for the Plaintiff £80.8.6 & Costs of Suit.

The Execution of a Deed from Moses Leathers to Moses Fussel was duly Acknowledged in open Court by Moses Leathers the Subscriber thereto and Ordered to be Registered. [See ODB 4/474.]

The Execution of a Deed from Wm Dunnagan to Wm Cain was duly proved in open Court by the Oath of Wm Hall the Subscribing Witness thereto and ordered to be Registered. [See ODB 4/471.]

Jno Reeves vs James Bowers} Trover Case. Jury sworn, to Wit: Philip Walker, Richard Faucet, Shadrick Forrister, Jehu Whithead, Tho Watts, Theo Thompson, Joseph Haisting, Tho Couch, Joseph Trice, Wm Cooper, Jno Adams, Eli Hill - find for the plaintiff & assess his Damage to £7.4.0 & Costs.

On Motion, Ordered that Joseph Hews an orphan boy of age of Nine years be bound to Wm Ray to learn the art of a Farmer, until he arrive to the age of Twenty one years, and the said Wm Ray engages to give to the said Joseph Hews at the expiration of his servitude a Horse of the Value of twenty five hard dollars, and a suit of good wearing apparel. [Bond not found.]

Elihu Woods is appointed overseer of the road in the room of James Latta Jr from Newtons ??? to the trading road. Ordered that the following hands work under the said overseer, to Wit: Enuch Collins, Wm Clark, Hugh Woods, Hugh Montgomery, Tho Latta, Jno Latta Sr & James R????

Jesse Miller is appointed overseer of the road in the room of Richard Williams from the South fork of little river to the town of Hillsbo.

21. Jno Ray esqr vs Mark Patterson & others} Debt. Same Jury as in No 15 sworn - find for the plaintiff £405.15.2 with Interest with costs of suit.

Edw’d Wilson is appointed overseer of the road from Colo Mebanes to the creek near the widow Nelsons in the room of Robinson Mumford, ordered that the usual hands under the work on the said road under the said Edw’d overseer.

Ordered that a Citation issue to Samuel Scarlet the reputed father of a Bastard Child begotten on the body of Jane Runnalds to come into Court & abide such order as the Court may make for the nurture & support of the said Child. [See Bastardy Bonds, image 486 which calls her Jane Randless.]
