William Andrews qualified as Constable.

Currethers, William Wallis, Isaac Patterson, Richard Cate, Joseph Baker, John
Woods, William King, Wm H Goodloe, James Campbell, William Whitsett, Matthew Barber.
Find that the Defendant did assume & within three years, that there is no
set off & assess the Plffs Damages to £38.10/ & Costs, appeal prayed.
The State vs Jacob Bledsoe & George Herndon} £100 each
for the appearance of Jacob Bledsoe.

Willie & Wm P Mangum vs Moses Jones} Same Jury. Find the

James Webb vs William Edwards} Jury No 1 charged. Find the
Dollars mentioned in the bond declared on to be of the Value of Two hundred

Administration on the Estate of Elizabeth Loftin Jr Dec’d is
granted to Mark Morgan Yeargin who enters into Bond with Jarratt Yeargin &

John Coupland vs Abram ???? Collins} Jury charged:
Samuel Corruthers, William Tate, William Wallis, Isaac Patterson, Richard Cate,
John Woods, William King, William H Goodloe, Henry Shutt, William P Mangum,
John Sparrow, John Strayhorn. Find the Defendant Guilty & within Six Months
& assess the plaintiffs to 11d ¾ & Costs.
[OCPQS 7/442 – Aug 1808]
John Coupland vs Abram Collins} Isaac Jackson a witness in
behalf of the Defendant being called by the Sheriff & failing to appear
according to the Subpoena Served on him, is fined according to the Act of
Assembly.
Margaret Wall v. John Douglass} Same Jury charged. Find that
the Defendant does detain the Negro Harry mentioned in the plaintiffs
declaration & within three years, that there is no Accord &
Satisfaction, that the said Negro is of the Value of £325 & assess the
Plffs damages to £15 & Costs.

Mason, William Carrington. Find the Defendant not Guilty. Ordered that the
prosecutor pay the Costs of this Prosecution of this Suit.

The State vs Peggy Lamb} Same Jury charged. Find the Def’t
not Guilty. On motion, Ordered that the prosecution pay the Costs of this
prosecution.
Ordered that William Dunnagain for swearing in contempt of
the Court be Confined in the Stocks until the rise of the Court this day.
The State vs Lucy Tudor} Jury No 2 charged. Find the Def’t
Guilty in manner & form as charged in the bill of Ind’t.

Thursday 25th August 1808, Court met according to
adjournment. Present: Sam’l Benton, John Taylor, Thomas Brewer} esqrs.
The State vs Sam’l Cloud & Sarah Cloud} Ind’t. Jury
charged: Sam’l Currothers, William Tate, William Wallace, Isaac Patterson,
Richard Cate, John Woods, William King, Joseph Baker, Reuben Boroughs, John
Strayhorn, John Mitchell, Stephen Taylor. Find the Defendants Guilty in Manner
& form as charged in the bill of Indictment.

The State vs Bennett Partin} Ind’t. Same Jury Sworn: Samuel
Currothers, William Tate, William Wallace, Isaac Patterson, Richard Cate, John
Woods, William King, Joseph Baker, Reuben Boroughs, John Strayhorn, Wm H
Goodloe, George Carrington. Find the Defendant Guilty in Manner & form
as charged in the Bill of Indictment. Ordered that the Defendant be fined 6d and
that he be imprisoned for the Space of three Months Calendar Months from
this day & from thence until the fines & Costs of this prosecution are
paid.

Ordered that John Underhill of the Age of ten years be bound
to Christopher Daniel until he arrives to lawful Age to learn that Art &
mistery of a farmer. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 497.]
Ordered that Spencer Cole Son of Patsy Cole now of the age
of Eleven years 22nd May next be bound to Mark Pickett until he
arrive to lawful age to learn the Art & Mistery of a farmer. [See
Apprentice Bonds, image 491.]
Ordered that Edward Powell son of Edm’d Powell now of the
age of 15th years [sic] 10th March last be bound to Mark
Pickett until he arrives to lawful age to learn the Art & mistery of a
farmer. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 490.]
Administration of the Estate of Barnard Cate Dec’d is
granted to Barnard Cate who enters into Bond with John Workman in the Sum of
£250.
[OCPQS 7/452 – Aug 1808]
Administration with the Will annexed [OWB D/235] of
the Estate of John Harder Dec’d is granted to Sarah Harden his Widow who enters
into Bond with William Holt in the Sum of £3000.
Whereas it is represented to this Court by John Douglass
Executor of the last Will & Testament of John Douglass Dec’d [OWB D/224] that after selling a filley by the Testator
directed to be sold for the payment of his debts & of the perishable
property belonging to the estate of said deceased & after paying debts to
the Amount of the proceeds of Sales he finds there are still debts remaining to
be Satisfied, Whereupon it is Ordered by the Court that the said John Douglass
Ex’r &c have permission to expose to Sale so much of the personal estate of
his Testator yet remaining undisposed of as will be sufficient to discharge the
outstanding debts.

The State vs Negro Pompey} Ind’t. Jury Sworn: Reuben
Boroughs, Isaac Patterson, William Wallace, Richard Cate, William King, Joseph
Woods, George Johnston, Francis Barbee, Mark Barbee, John Holden, Henry Shutt,
William Horton. Find the Defendant Guilty in Manner & form as charged in
the Second Count in the bill of Ind’t, but not Guilty as charged in the first
Count in the Ind’t. Ordered that the Def’t be confined in the Pillory for one
hour & then that he shall receive thirty nine Lashes on his bare Back. It
is also Ordered that the Sheriff carry this Sentence into Execution
immediately.

[OCPQS 7/455 – Aug 1808]
Friday 26th August 1808, Court met according to
adjournment. Present: William Shepperd, James Webb, Thomas Whitted} esqrs.
Ordered that John Taylor Jr be appointed Overseer of the
road leading from the Town of Hillsbo to Hart & Campbell’s Mill on Eno
River vizt to commence from where the outside line of the town lotts crosses
the said road and from thence to the river banks on this Side. It is Ordered
that the following hands work on said road, vizt: William Whitteds hands,
Thomas Crabtree, John Taylor’s hands that work on his plantation, Henry
Fossetts hands, Robert Glenn & hands, Conrod Ringstaff & hands, ???
Burton’s hands or them that work on his plantation, John McCallum & hands,
Martin Palmer & hands, Owen Lindly & hands, the hands that live or may
live on Mrs Turners Plantation and the hands that may live on the plantation of
Henry Thompson Sr and all other hands living near said road that do not work on
any other road.
[OCPQS 7/456 – Aug 1808]
Ordered that Gavin Alves & David Yarborough be appointed
Commissioners to examine & settle the Accounts of John Casey County Trustee
& report to this Term.
Ordered that John Watson be appointed Overseer of the road
from Rob’t Nutts ?? to John Cain’s plantation on Eno River, and that John Cains
hands on said plantation, Southerland May, Phillip Bennett, James Watson, John
Watson Jr work on the Same.
Ordered that Joshua O’Daniel pay to Rhodah Workman the Sum
of Twenty Seven pounds in annual pay’ts, vizt Seven pounds immediately &
five pounds annually thereafter until the whole be paid for the Support &
maintenance of a child of which she hath lately been delivered of & of
which he stands charged as the reputed father. [Bastardy Bonds, image 1223.]

Josiah Turner appeared in open Court & took the Oath of
Qualification as deputy Sheriff.
The Execution of a Deed from William Newman to William
Elliott was duly acknowledged in open Court by the Subscriber thereto &
ordered to be registered. [See ODB 13/213.]
