The Grand Jury impanneled & sworn, to Wit: Richard Christmas Rob’t Scoby, Foreman, Jno Flintham, Joseph Hart, Jno Holden, Richard Cate, James Latta, James Pratt, Rob’t Scoby, Jno Holms, Wm Gwinn, James Wilson, Wm Clarke, Samuel Wilson, Charles King, Jno Kelley.

Joseph Sloss sworn to attend the Grand Jury.

Rob’t Scoby is appointed Foreman of the Grand Jury in the room of Richard Christmas who is excused from his attendance on acco of the indisposition of his wife.

Rob’t Tate is appointed Overseer of the road from Stoney Creek to Caswell line. Administration of the estate of Isaac Gattis is Granted to Samuel Thompson, the widow the said Dec’d having in open Court relinquished the same, and the said Samuel enters into Bond with Wm Newman & Jno Flintham his Security in the sum of £200.

Administration of the estate of Thomas Holden is Granted to Jno Holden son of the said Dec’d and Elizabeth Holden the widow who enters into Bond with Wm Lytle & Jno Taylor Esqs Sec’ys in the sum of £1500, and the said Jno & Elizabeth quallified accordingly.

Conrod Pile Overseer of the road from Butlers ford [Swepsonville] to the ford on great Alamance resigns and returns Francis Holt in his stead.

Administration of the estate of John Ray Dec’d is Granted to Susanah Ray his widow and the said Susanah enters into Bond with Wm Ray & Wm Patterson his Sec’ty for the sum of – order & is’d.  [See also administration OCPQS 5/12 & OCPQS 5/33, guardianship OCPQS 5/361.]

Tho Bevins next friend &c vs Tho Watts} Same Jury sworn as in No 9 sworn, find Verd’t for Def’t.

Mathew McCauley who was summoned to attend as a Talis man this day and has failed to attend is fined 20/ peremtorily. Fine pd.

18. Benjamin Bagley vs Ephraim Cook} Same Jury as in No 9 sworn except Rob’t Tate in the room of Mathew McCauley sworn & find the Bond not paid and assess the plaintiffs damaged to £2.10.4 & 6d Costs.

George Newton Overseer of the road resigns and returns Edward Wortham from the North Fork of Little River to the South fork of Little River.

20. Thomas Bivins vs Jesse Miller} Case. Jury sworn, to Wit: Jno McCrory, Jno Mitchel, Jacob Graves, Jno Jameson, Wm Patterson, Jno Steel, Joseph Thompson, Thomas Tate, Rob Faucet, Wm Bradford, Wm Montgumry, Wm Burns. Find a ver’t for the [blank]

Shadrick Forrister, Abraham Whittaker & Richard Rhodes are discharged from their Guardianship of James Heflin who is adjudged by the Court to have recovered his reason. [See OCPQS 4/367 & OCPQS 4/371.]

29. Zachariah Herndon vs Reuben Westmoreland} Covenant. Same Jury as in No 28 sworn, find a Verd’t £135.8 & 6d Cost.

Ordered that an orphan Child of Lucy Burrow be bound to Lazarus Cates aged two years & two months old named Temperus Burrow. [Bond not found. See OCPQS 4/403 where Merrimon Cole is charged with being the father.]

Wm Dorsett Overseer of the road from Lazarus Cates to Benehans old store road leading to Benehans old store resigns & returns Rob’t Cats in his place.

Thursday morn 1st March 1792, Court met according to adjournment. Present: Wm Courtny, Walter Alves, Andrew Burk} Esqrs.

Tho Ellis is appointed overseer of the road in the room of Benjamin Rainey.

Wm Eckles is appointed Constable for the District of orange and enters in to Bond with Jno Sloss & Dav’d Dening his Securities & quallifies accord.

9. The State vs James McAdams} Ind’t. Jury sworn, to Wit: Henry Sarver, Jno Riggs, Joseph Wood, Enuch Collins, Wm McKee, Henry O’Dannel, Samuel Torrintine, Wm Rogers, Charles Ray, Dav’d Dening, Rob’t Tate, Jno Tate. Find the Def’t not Guilty.

John Latta Jr is appointed Constable in the District of St Maries and entered into Bond with James Moore & Wm Cain & quallified accordingly.

State vs Drewry Johnston} Ind’t Trespass. Same Jury as in No 9 sworn, find the Defend’t Guilty as charg’d in the Ind’t, fined 1d & Costs.

[OCPQS 4/403 - Feb 1792]

Andrew Farris is appo excused from the paym’t of a poll tax for reasons shewn.

Ordered that Meriman Cole the reputed father of a child begoten on the body of Lucy Burrow pay unto the said Lucy Burrow within Six months from this date the sum of fifteen Pounds for as reimbursement to the the said Lucy Burrow for her trouble and expence with the said child for three years past. [See Bastardy Bonds, images 498 & 553, also OCPQS 4/398 where the child Temperus Burrow is bound to Lazarus Cate.]

Wm King submits to the Court

Ordered that John Leathers the reputed father of a child begoten of the body of Mary Blalock pay unto said Mary Blalock within six months from this date the sum of Five Pounds as a reimbursement to the said Mary for her trouble and expence about the raising of said Child. Satisfied as pr receipt. [See Bastardy Bonds, images 488 & 502.]

14. The State vs Joshua Childers} Ind’t. Same Jury as in No 9 Sworn, find the Defendant Guilty as in manner & form charg’d in the bill of Ind’t.

Thomas Horton is appointed overseer of the road from Carringtons Brid[g]e on flatt river to Thomas Watsons ford on little river in the room of Jas Moore.

The Court adjourns til tomorrow morning 9 o’Clock.

Friday morning 3rd March 1792, The Court met according to Adjournment. Present: Wm Courtny, Jno Taylor, Wm Shepperd, James Carson, Sterling Harris, Wm F Strudwick, Walter Alves, And[rew] Burke} Esqrs.

Samuel Benton Clerk of Orange County Court resigns his office as Clerk aforesd and Abner Benton Bruce is appointed Clerk in his stead and enters into Bond with Samuel Benton, Wm Shepperd, James Carson, Andrew Burke and Wm F Strudwick esqs his Sec’ys and at the same time the said Abner took the oaths for his quallification.

John McCauley is appointed Collector of taxes for the District of Hills for the year 1791, and enters into Bond with Jno Carrington & [blank] Trousdale his Sec’ys. The same Justices of the bench as above except Jno Taylor esq.

Ordered that the Clerk give notice by advertisement to the County of orange that [blank]

Benj Leonards Admrs vs Thom Farmer} Same Jury as in No 9 sworn. Find a Verd’t for the plaintiff for £8 with Int from 11th June 1780 til this date & Costs.

Henry Thompson vs Rob’t Ferguson} Same Jury as in No 9 find a Verd’t for the Plaintiff for £4.16.8 & Costs.

Jacob Flowers vs Rob’t Ferguson} Jury sworn, to wit: Tho Mulholland, Jno Steel, Jno Woods, Jno Albright, Tho Horne, Henry McCallum, Jno Armstrong, Archer Harris, Tho Brooks, James Christmas, Garrot Garrison, James Andrews. Find for the Plaintiff £3.18.6 & Costs.

Thomas Watts & Henry Thompson are appointed patrollers for the town of Hillsbo.

A Power of Attorney from Samuel Price to Joseph Taylor was proved in open Court by the Oath of Andrew Burke as also instructions from the aforesaid Samuel Price was proved by the Oath of Andrew Buke on motion ordered to be recorded. [See OWB B/225 & OWB B/227.]

[OCPQS 4/406 - Feb 1792]

Ordered that James Carrigan & Margery his wife be allow’d the whole profits of the Lands lately belonging to Jacob Deblin Dec’d for the support and maintainance of the orphans of the said Jacob Deblin in the care of the said James Carrigan and Margery his wife, and that the Executors of the said Jacob Debley pay to the said James & wife such profits for the present year and at the end of the year deliver possession of the said Lands to the said James Carrigan and wife – and that the said Carrigan & wife give Security in the sum of £150 for the maintainance of the said orphans on the profits of the said Lands and that they commit no waist on the said Lands. James Paine is approved of Security. [See also accounting OCPQS 5/304, orphan apprenticed OCPQS 5/36, OCPQS 5/526, OCPQS 5/362 & OCPQS 5/492.]

Ordered that the Clerk give notice to the County of Orange by advertisement that Absalom Tatom, John Hogg, Wm Lytle and John Allison or any two of them a Committee to examine the State of the records of the County and report thereon to the May Court, viz the No of Deeds or other conveyances as nearly as can be ascertained that require to be renewed and report also the time that the business would require be done in.

[OCPQS 4/407 - Feb 1792]

Saturday morning 10 o’Clock 3d March 1792, Present: Wm Courtny, Wm Nunn, Wm Lytle, Wm McCauly, Andrew Burke} Esqrs.

Ordered that the Collectors in future Collect the County tax money and pay the same into the hands of the County Trustee, and that he the said County Trustee receive no vouchers from the Collectors of the said County tax and that the said County Trustee take up the County orders as they are presented agreable to their dates and not otherwise.

Ordered that Sterling Harris esq be allowed £17.10.3 for his trouble and expence about the building [of] the pillory and stocks, as ordered last Term and that the County Treasurer pay the same.

Ordered that John Rhodes be allowed four pounds Sixteen shillings for work done as a Carpenter about the pillory & stocks & that the County Treasurer pay &c.

Ordered that Sterling Harris esq be allowed to bring in his acco a further acco at next Court for painting the said pillory & stocks &c and for the scantling about the said pillory & Stocks which was perchas’d of James Baldridge esq.

[OCPQS 4/408 - Feb 1792]

Ordered that the Sheriff notify all the Justices of Orange County to attend on the 2d day of our next Term to take under consideration an act of Assembly pass’d in’88 for Transcribing the records of Registers office.

Ordered that Samuel Benton late Clerk of Orange County Court be allowed fifty pounds for his Ex officio Services for one year past. Ordered that the County Treasurer pay the same.

Wm Courtny, Dav’d Ray and Walter Alves Esqs are appointed to assess the town property and make report to the Clerk as soon as may be.

Ordered that Joseph Underwood son of Mary Underwood aged about twelve years be bound to William Patterson who is learn him to read, write & Cypher the four comon Rules also to learn him the art of Shoemaking. [See Apprentice Bonds, images 36 & 196.]

Ordered that Jean Underwood be bound to John Ray who will give her comon freedom, learn her to read the Bible and give her a new Spining Wheel &c. [Bond not found, but per her mother Mary’s request. See Apprentice Bonds, image 36.]

The Execution of a Deed from Hugh Woods to Elihu Woods was duly proved in open Court by the Oath [of] William Nash one of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be registered. [See ODB 4/557.]

The Execution of a Deed from John Woods to Elihu Woods was duly proved in open Court by the Oath of Joseph Woods one of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be registered. [See ODB 4/556.]

The Execution of a Deed from Elihu Woods to John Estes was duly proved in open Court by the Oath of William Nash one of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be registered. [See ODB 4/557.]

The Execution of a Deed from Robert Ray to John Ray was duly proved in open Court by the Oath of William Ray one of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be registered. [See ODB 4/530.]

The Execution of a Deed from James Willis to Lewis Kirk was duly proved in open Court by the Oath of Archibald Campbell one of the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be registered. [See ODB 4/543.]

Wm Kirk is appointed Overseer of the road from Jas Tinnens to Ellinor Moores in the room of H O’Dannel.

Wm Ray son of Dav’d is appointed overseer of the road from James Tinnens to Woodies ferry in the room of John Graham.

George Johnston is appointed overseer of the road from the fork by Wm Couch’s to dry Creek in the room of Mann Patterson, with the addition of George Gregston & Wm Gregston to the former hands.

John Melvin is appointed overseer of the road from Stony Creek to the Shallow ford of Haw river with the convenient hands.

John Haney is appointed overseer of the road from Caswell line to the shallow ford of Haw river with the usual hands.

Joseph Kennet? is appointed overseer of the road from James Vaughns to the Chatham line.

Alexander Mebane is appointed overseer of the road from the Widow Faucets to Homer? Stones? place.
