Administration with the Will annexed of the Estate of Jacob Cantril Deceased was Granted to Zebedee Cantril and enters into Bond with Wm Cantril & James Morrow securities in the Sum of four hundred pounds. Mary Cantril the former Executrix of Jacob Cantril having died without Will and Joseph Cantrel the other executor having Relinquished his right to qualify as Executor &c. [See OWB B/102.]

Agreeable to the Petition of James Morrow exhibited to this Court, Ordered that he have leave to build a Grist Mill on quaker Creek in Orange County &c. [See Dunaway’s Mill Records, page 22.]

Thomas Cantril Son of Jacob Cantril deceased comes into Court and chooses Wm Fossett Senior as Guardian.

Wm Holt is appointed Overseer of the road from Christopher Holts to Rays road on the big Alamance in the room of John Powell.

Wm Craig Son of David Craig Deceased comes into Court and chooses Wm McCauley & James Mitchel Guardians on entering into Bond with George Johnston & George Long Securities in the Sum of two hundred & fifty pounds. Johnston Craig Son of David Craig deceased comes into open court and chooses Wm McCauley & James Mitchel as Guardians on entering into Bond with George Johnston & Geo Long Securities in the Sum of two hundred & fifty pounds.

Agreeable to the Petition of John Allison exhibited to this Court, Ordered that said Allison be continued as Register for Orange County on entering bond with Wm Lytle & Walter Alves his Securities in the Sum of five thousand pounds. Justices present Jno Taylor, Wm Ray, A Tatom & Hardy Hawkins esquires.

John Walker esquire who comes into court and resigns his office as County Treasurer. David Ray is appointed in his stead on entering into Bond with Security agreeable to Law in the Sum of five thousand pounds.

Edward Wilson comes into open Court and resigns his Office as Entry taker for the county of Orange.

Administration of the Estate of Mark Morgan deceased is Granted to Jacob Flowers junior on entering into Bond agreable to Law in the Sum of £1000 with James Patterson, Lewis Kirk, Ghiled Vicki [?] & John Scott who are approved of the court. Ordered that the Adm’r sell the perishable property agreeably to Law.

Ordered that William Simmons an Orphan aged fourteen years next month be bound to John Clarke to learn the trade and mistery of a weaver. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 246.]

Thomas Whithead is appointed Constable for Caswell District on entering into Bond agreeable to Law with Jno Thompson & James Baker Securities.

On motion of John Williams Atto for the county, Ordered that Thomas Mulhollan do tomorrow shew cause why an attachment should not issue against him as the Deputy of the Entry taker of this county for not delivering the Book of entries for claims of Lands in this county & other papers & writings belonging to the county of Orange.

Levi Hall brings into court the body of Joseph Montgomery and delivers him up to the Court, from his security.

Edmond Ballard is in Custody of the Sheriff of Orange.

William Eckles is appointed Constable for Orange District on entering into Bond agreeably to Law and qualified accordingly.

On motion of John Williams Attorney for the county, Ordered that Edward Wilson do shew cause tomorrow why an Attachment should not issue issue against him as Entry taker of this county for not delivering the Book of Entries for claims of Land in this county and other papers and writings belon[g]ing to the county of Orange.

William Love is fined preremptory for not attending as a Juror at the Sheriffs call.

The State vs Tobias Stalcup} Ind’t assault - find Defendant Guilty as in manner & form charge in the Indictm’t, fined 1d & Costs.

Samuel Thompson is appointed Constable on entering into Bond with Security agreeable to Law.

The State vs Joseph Loyd [sic]} petit Larceny, pleads not Guilty. Jury Sworn. Ordered that the Sheriff carry him to the whiping post and give him thirteen lashes between the house of fore & six.

The State vs Joseph Loy [sic]} Indictm’t Petit Larc’y. Jury Sworn, find Defend Guilty. Ordered that the Sheriff carry him to the whiping post and give him thirteen Lashes & let him stand in Stock three Quarters hours.

John Allison and David Ray came into Open Court & took the Oaths of Office & also the Oaths prescribed by Law necessary for public Officers &c.

On motion of William Cain, Ordered that the chairman grant a certificate to Negroe Sampson the property of said Cain to carry a Gun agreeably to Act of Assembly on the Lands of William Cain adjoining his manor plantation & he the said Cain enters into Bond with Rich’d Bennehan agreeably to Law. On motion of Richard Bennehan, Ordered that the Chairman grant a Certificate to Negroes Daniel on Brickhouse plantation, Frank on his Quarter plantation, Ned at his Store to carry Guns agreeably to Act of Assembly on the said Bennehan’s, he the said Bennehan entering into Bond agreeably to Law. On motion of John Williams esq Atto for James Patterson and the petition of the said Patterson to build a Water Grist Mill on bolings creek on the Petitioners Own Land, It is Ordered by the court that the said Petition be rejected as it appears by the Petitioners own shewing that he is owner of the Land on both sides of the stream where he wishes the said Mill to be erected, and consequently does not [fall] within the meaning of the Act of Assembly providing for Erection of public Mills. Ordered by the court that the several Guns taken by the patrolers of St Maries District from the Negroes of Rich’d Bennehan & Wm Cain & others be returned to the said Bennehan & Cain &c & others &c. [See NCAH Slave Records, image 12.]

On motion of Walter Alves esquire Ordered that Negroe Peter have leave to carry a Gun on his plantation on Little river on entering into Bond with John Hogg Security in the sum of One hundred pounds. Ordered that the Chairman grant him a certificate agreeable to Law &c. [See NCAH Slave Records, image 16.]

Ordered that William Ray, James Patterson & David Patterson be appointed to examine and settle the Acco’s and vouchers of Mary Hawkins Executrix of John Hawkins deceased and report to next court.

As Representation to the Court by William Ray esquire of the Necessity to appoint Commissioner to keep open the Rivers and Creek in this county for passage of Fish up the same under the Act of Assembly passed in 1787, the court having taken the same into consideration do appoint Jonathan Lindley and John Hogan Commissioners for the county to carry the said Act into effect for one year from this date and enjoin on them to make return of their acts and proceedings as by said Law required.

John Hogan, Walter Alves esquires are appointed to assist David Ray in examining and settling the accounts and vouchers of John Walker esq late county Trustee & report to next court.

On motion of Samuel Benton Atto &c, ordered that a citation issue to Alexander Maben Esqr & James Mebane Sr who are named as Executors in the Will of Daniel Hanley Deceas’d to notify and require the said Alexander Mebane & James Mebane to ??? at next Court and take on the the Execution of the said Will or refuse the same. The State vs Rich’d Blackwood junior} Jury Sworn, find find [sic] Defendant Guilty as in manner and form charged in the Bill of Indictment.

Agreeable to to [sic] and Order made in favour [of] James Carrigan and his wife, Ordered that Writs do issue to lay off her Dower and thirds agreeably to Act of Assembly.

On the Petition of the Widow Willis Ordered that a Writ do issue to lay of her share of the personal Estate of Peter Willis deceased. Ordered that the Executors have leave to sell too Negroes George and Bobb the property of Peter Willis deceased to pay the Debts of the Intestate.

On motion, Ordered that Laban Taban a free Mullattoe boy now in Custody of the Goaler be hired out to the highest bidder from this day to Christmas next for the purpose of paying his prison charges, subject to be remanded by the court, and the person having to liable for the time the boy may be with him. We Samuel Benton & William Duffy to whom was referred a suit and matter of Controversy between James Christmas & May Steele Executrix of John Steele Deceased having met that purpose at the house of William Courtney in Hillsboro on the 25h of February 1795 and having heard the allegations of each party do award that the said James Christmas deliver up to Mary Steele a certain Bond or single Bill Given by John Steele to Thomas Ho?? On the 17th of January 1791 for one hundred Spanish Milled Dollars – that then the said Mary do pay the said James Eleven pounds five shillings and six pence currency – that party pay their own Witnesses and Attorney in the suit, that the rest of the Costs therein be equally divided, and paid by them and that the parties pass mutual releases for all Debts, dues, demands, suits, controversies and litigations in Law or Equity to this date.
