Reuben Holt is sworn as Constable to attend the Grand Jury.

Ordered that the following Jurors be fined for their non attendance at this Term to wit: James Piles, Joseph Tate, John Ray, Isaac Brackin, Martin Shoftner, Frederick Shoftner, Michael Holt Jr, Wm Ray Sr, William Lewis, & Michael Shoftner.

Alexander Montgomery and James Grimes having in the view & hearing of this Court at time sitting ???? greatly and in the contempt of the Court been guilty of a riot affray & public breach of the peace & being now before the Court, it is ordered that they and each of them be committed to the public Gaol of this County the there to remain without Bail or maneprizes until 12 o’Clock tomorrow for the contempt aforesaid & that the Sheriff of Orange County carry this order into execution.

The State vs Samuel Southerland} Ind’t Assault, charged & pleads not Guilty. Same Jury Sworn &c. Find the Defendant Guilty. Fined £7.10 & ordered into the Custody of the Sheriff till fine & Costs paid.

Ordered On Motion of Wm Duffy Atto &c, ordered that Tho Watts the reputed Father of a bastard Child begotten on the body of Mary McDade pay unto the said Mary McDade the sum of twenty seven pounds in yearly payments to commence form the birth of the said Child, to wit, Seven pounds for the first year & five pounds for every ????? year thereafter, Until the whole be paid & that he enter into bond According to Law. Elizabeth Steel & Mary Steel Infants daughters of John Steel Dec’d come into Court & choose John Hodge their Guardian. And at the same time the Court appoints the said Joseph Guardian to Sarah Steel, Joseph Steel & Agnes Steel Orphans of the aforesaid John Steel. And the said John offers for his Securities Rich’d Christmas & Joseph Baker who are accepted by the Court. The sd Guardian gives Bond in the Sum of £2000 for Joseph Steel & £1000 for each of the Girls. [See also OCPQS 6/26.]

Administration of the Estate of Sam’l Daniel Dec’d is granted to Jno Daniel who entered into Bond in the Sum of £500 with Mann Patterson and Robert T Daniel his Securities. [See also inventory OCPQS 5/400.]

Administration of the Estate of Henry Lloy [sic] is granted to Margret Lloy the Widow who enters into bond with Geo Lloy & Abram Thomas in the sum of £250. Joseph Baker is appointed Guardian to Mary Ray Daughter of John Ray who enters into Bond with Joseph Hodge & John Thompson Richard Christmas his Securities in the Sum of £1200. [See also administration OCPQS 4/397, OCPQS 5/12 & OCPQS 5/33.]

Administration of the Estate of Reason Rickets Dec’d is granted to Anthony Rickets upon his entering into bond with [blank] and [blank] his Securities in the Sum of £250. [See also guardianship OCPQS 6/224.]

Ordered that James Roach orphan of James Roach Dec’d now of the age of 14 years the 1st day of March Instant ???? ???? be bound unto Wm Murrow until he arrive to full age to learn the art of [blank]. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 355.]

On hearing the Petition of Barnet Troxler praying that certain Errors in a patent or Grant of Certain Lands made to him the said Barnet by Samuel Johnston Esqr late Governor of this State be corrected, which said Patent describes said Lands in the following Manner, to wit: “One hundred & sixty six acres lying & being in our County of Orange, lying in the fork of Stinking Quarter adjoining the Lands of Jacob Bosten, John Graves, John Shaly and Peter Poor, beginning at a Hickory Jacob Graves Corner running thence North forty five Degrees East twenty Chains to a Dogwood thence North forty five Degrees West forty five Chains to a Post Oak, South forty five Degrees West twenty three chains to a stake thence South forty Degrees East Sixty Six Chains to a Spanish Oak, thence South forty five Degrees west twenty Chains to a Stake, thence South forty five Degrees West thirty Chains to a white Oak, then N forty five Degrees East twenty three chains to a black Oak, then north forty five Degrees West Eleven Chains to a Hickory the first Station” which said description in fact contains no land. It is considered by this Court a Majority of Acting Justices of Orange County being present, that the Errors in the said Patent be corrected and it being made appear to the Satisfaction of the Court that Andrew Gibson who lays or has laid some claim to the land claimed by Barnet Troxler and all other Persons who have Land adjoining the Same have been duly notified according to Law & it having been also made manifest to this Court that the lines of the said Patent ought to be described in Manner hereinafter Mentioned, it is ordered by the Court that the Secretary of the State of North Carolina do & he the Secretary is hereby

John Scarlet Jr is appointed overseer of the road from Cates’s Spring Branch to Eno River at Wm Cabe’s in the room of Wm Riley with the usual hands.

Rich’d Holman is appointed overseer of the road from Person Line to Tho Griffith’s Spring Branch in the room of James Watson with the usual hands.

Wm Shepperd is appointed overseer of the road in the room of Stephen Thompson from the said Shepperd’s Lane to the Town of Hillsborough with the usual hands, and that he cause the same to be kept in good repair.

Ordered that James Baldridge Esqr Treasurer of Public Buildings for the County of Orange be allowed out of the Collection Monies in his hands Sixteen pounds sixteen Shillings for repairs &c done the Court house and Prison agreeably to his Accompt rendered and filed.
