Alexander Montgomery and James Grimes having in the view
& hearing of this Court at time sitting ???? greatly and in the
contempt of the Court been guilty of a riot affray & public breach of the
peace & being now before the Court, it is ordered that they and each of
them be committed to the public Gaol of this County the there to remain
without Bail or maneprizes until 12 o’Clock tomorrow for the contempt aforesaid
& that the Sheriff of Orange County carry this order into execution.

that Tho Watts the reputed Father of a bastard Child begotten on the
body of Mary McDade pay unto the said Mary McDade the sum of twenty seven
pounds in yearly payments to commence form the birth of the said Child, to wit,
Seven pounds for the first year & five pounds for every ????? year
thereafter, Until the whole be paid & that he enter into bond According to

Elizabeth Steel & Mary Steel Infants daughters of
John Steel Dec’d come into Court & choose John Hodge their Guardian. And at
the same time the Court appoints the said Joseph Guardian to Sarah Steel,
Joseph Steel & Agnes Steel Orphans of the aforesaid John Steel. And the
said John offers for his Securities Rich’d Christmas & Joseph Baker who are
accepted by the Court. The sd Guardian gives Bond in the Sum of £2000 for

On hearing the Petition of Barnet Troxler praying that
certain Errors in a patent or Grant of Certain Lands made to him the said
Barnet by Samuel Johnston Esqr late Governor of this State be corrected, which
said Patent describes said Lands in the following Manner, to wit: “One hundred
& sixty six acres lying & being in our County of Orange, lying in the
fork of Stinking Quarter adjoining the Lands of Jacob Bosten, John Graves, John
Shaly and Peter Poor, beginning at a Hickory Jacob Graves Corner running thence
North forty five Degrees East twenty Chains to a Dogwood thence North forty
five Degrees West forty five Chains to a Post Oak, South forty five Degrees
West twenty three chains to a stake thence South forty Degrees East Sixty Six
Chains to a Spanish Oak, thence South forty five Degrees west twenty Chains to
a Stake, thence South forty five Degrees West thirty Chains to a white Oak,
then N forty five Degrees East twenty three chains to a black Oak, then north
forty five Degrees West Eleven Chains to a Hickory the first Station” which
said description in fact contains no land. It is considered by this Court a
Majority of Acting Justices of Orange County being present, that the Errors in
the said Patent be corrected and it being made appear to the Satisfaction of
the Court that Andrew Gibson who lays or has laid some claim to the land
claimed by Barnet Troxler and all other Persons who have Land adjoining the
Same have been duly notified according to Law & it having been also made
manifest to this Court that the lines of the said Patent ought to be described
in Manner hereinafter Mentioned, it is ordered by the Court that the Secretary
of the State of North Carolina do & he the Secretary is hereby

Required to alter the Description of the land conveyed or
intended to be conveyed by the Patent aforesaid to the said Barnet Troxler to
the following description, Viz: Beginning at a Hickery running thence North
forty five Degrees East twenty Chains to a Dogwood, thence North forty five Degrees
West forty five Chains to a Post Oak, thence South forty five Degrees West
twenty three Chains to a Stone, thence South forty five Degrees East twenty six
Chains to a Spanish Oak, thence South forty five Degrees West twenty Chains to
a Stake, thence South forty five Degrees East thirty Chains to a White Oak,
thence North forty four five Degrees East twenty three Chains to a black
Oak, thence North forty five Degrees West Eleven Chains to the first Station.
And that the Clerk Certify the same to the Secretary.
Whereas It is represented to the County Court of Orange
County now Setting, that John Leigh of Orange County being indebted to one
[blank] Brown of the State of Virginia, did some years ago, in order to secure
to the said Brown his debts to him then due and owing, Convey to Robert
Campbell Esqr of the County of Orange to the use of the said Brown, certain
property therein expressed & the Execution of the said Conveyance was
proved some years ago in said County Court of Orange & was admitted to
record, But the same is either lost of mislaid, as that is cannot be found in
the Clerk’s office of said County, I Samuel Benton Assistant Clerk &c do
therefore at the request of the said Jno Leigh

me to give up the said Conveyance to the said John Leigh, saying that the Debt
in consideration of which the said Conveyance was made was Settled. /S Benton/

the Inhabitants of Orange County, Ordered that the following Jury or any 12 of
them mark of[f] and lay our a new road the nearest & best way from
Hillsborough to the University, to Wit: James Strayhorn, James Hart, James
Haistings, Henry Haistings Jr, James Nelson, Wm Strayhorn, James Pratt, Andrew
Collins, John Mitchel, Alexander Bowland, James Watson, Wm Crabtree Jr, Thomas
Crabtree, John Flintham, George Pratt, James Mitchel, Wm Craig, Johnston Craig,
Wm Cook and John Barton – and that the said Jury make a return to our next
Court.

Pond to Moors branch it being a part of Allen Sykes road with the following

Burwell Chizenhall is appointed Overseer of the road from
the Cross roads above May’s to Wake County Line below Turner’s.
Jacob Jackson is appointed Overseer of the road from Wm
Jackson’s to Hillsbo in the room of Henry Neal with the following hands: Henry
Neal, Sam Carson, Wm Picket & hands, John Estes’s hands, Thomas Barton’s
hands, Eli Hill & hands & the hands of Wm Courtney.
Mann Patterson is appointed Overseer of the road from the
Cross roads at Wm Rhodes’s to Dry Creek in the room of Joseph Barbee with the
following hands: Chesley P Patterson & hands, Wm Williams, Mark Barbee,
John Barbee, John Abbet, Arthur Bab, Michael Hinchy, Uriah Hinchy, Charles
Carrol, Geo Johnston & James Roan?
Wm Edwards is appointed Overseer of the road in the room of
Othniel Farmer from Elliby’s Creek to the Hillsbo road by Jo Dixon’s with the
usual hands.

John Adams is appointed Overseer of the road in the room of
Nathaniel King.
John Scarlet Jr is appointed overseer of the road from
Cates’s Spring Branch to Eno River at Wm Cabe’s in the room of Wm Riley with
the usual hands.
Rich’d Holman is appointed overseer of the road from Person
Line to Tho Griffith’s Spring Branch in the room of James Watson with the usual
hands.
Wm Shepperd is appointed overseer of the road in the room of
Stephen Thompson from the said Shepperd’s Lane to the Town of Hillsborough with
the usual hands, and that he cause the same to be kept in good repair.
Ordered that James Baldridge Esqr Treasurer of Public Buildings
for the County of Orange be allowed out of the Collection Monies in his
hands Sixteen pounds sixteen Shillings for repairs &c done the Court house
and Prison agreeably to his Accompt rendered and filed.
