Administration of the estate of Brice Collins is Granted to Enuch Collins who takes the ??? of Adm’r & enters into Bond with Wm Lytle & Brice Collins Jr Sec’tys in the sum of Three Hundred Pounds.

Peter House is appointed overseer of the road from Wm Rhodes to Anderson Comers old place in the room of Dan’l Watson ordered that the usual hands work under him.

Wm Park is appointed overseer of the road from James Clarks to the forks of the road in the room of James Wilkinson.

George Carrington is appointed Overseer of the road from Barny Grimes to Wm Cains in the room of Mathew Cate.

George Laws is appointed overseer of the road from Granville County line to little river in the room of Edward Harris.

Richard Leigh is appointed overseer of the road from the cross roads to the Wake County line in the room of Joseph Woods.

Sam’l Thompson sworn to attend the Grand Jury as Constable this Term.

On motion of Joseph Taylor esq for the admition of Jno Ashe esqr to the practice of an Attorny in this Court, and Satisfactory p?? appearing to this Court of his, the said John as his Authority from the Hon the Judges of our Superior Court of Law &c to plead and practice as an Atto in any Court in this State, Ordered that the said John Ashe esq be admited to plead and practice as an Atto in this Court, according to the Tenure of his Licence and Authority aforesaid. And the said John Ashe esqr quallified accordingly.

Tuesday morning 10 O’Clock 24th May 91, The Court met according to adjournment. Present: John Ray, Andrew Murdock, Nicholas Gibbs} Esqrs.

Ordered that Ludwick Dronebury an orphan child of the age of 12 years the 10th day of January 1791 be bound to Adam Smith to learn the art and mistery of a Farmer until he arrive to the age of twenty one years of age. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 163.]

Administration of the estate of David Hannah is Granted to Rachel Hannah the widow of the said Dec’d and she enters into Bond with Thomas Rountree & [blank] Rountree Sec’ys in the sum of £200.  [See also guardianship OCPQS 6/359.]

Administration of the estate of David Douglass is Granted to Martha Douglass the widow of the said Dav’d and she enters into Bond with Tho Bradford & Jno Douglass Sec’ys in the sum of £250.  [See also guardianship OCPQS 4/356.]

Administration of the estate of George Friddle is Granted to Michael Mosier and he enters into Bond with James Patterson esqr & [blank] Sec’ys in the sum of £[blank].

Administration of the estate of Charles Horton is Granted to [Sarah] Horton the widow of the said Charles Horton and enters into bond with [blank] & [blank] Sec’ys in the sum of £[blank]. [See also withdrawal of security OCPQS 4/486.]

Administration of the estate of James Ma?? Dec’d is Granted to Thomas Wilkinson and he enters into Bond with [blank] & [blank] Sec’ys in the sum of £[blank].

Ordered that James Patterson & Andrew Murdock be appointed to settle with Rob’t Scoby Guardian of Soloman & Stephen Debow orphans of John Debow Dec’d and that the said Rob’t give an acco of his said Guardianship to the sd Patterson & Murdock & that they report to this Court. [But it appears that Scoby did not give an account and two more men were appointed to settle with him in May 1796 at OCPQS 5/95; Scoby was removed as guardian in Nov 1796 at OCPQS 5/143-145.]

Ordered that Isaac Hicks have leave be admited to build Erect a Water Grist Mill over Enoe river according to his petition filed at the last Term and that the same when built Erected be a Public Mill. The said Isaac Hicks pays the Court the sum of one pound, being the value of one acre of Land adjoining his Mill seat, as valued by four freeholders for that purpose appointed. [OCPQS 4/341 - May 1791]

Ordered that Jonathan Lindley esqrs and Wm Ray be appointed to examine the acco’s & vouchers of Jno Spurlin & Rachel Morrow adm of the estate of Wm Morrow Dec’d respecting the said estate, and make report to next Court.  [See also orphans apprenticed OCPQS 5/456.]

Catherine McAdams is appointed Guardian to Sarah & Catherine McAdams about of the age of discretion who have

Sarah McAdams & Catherine McAdams infants of the age of discretion comes into Court & chooses Cathrine McAdams their mother their Guardian until they arrive to the age of twenty one years.

Catherine McAdams is appointed Guardian to Ellen McAdams an infant under the years of discretion until the said infant arrive to the age of discretion.

On the Election of a new Sheriff, present the following Justice, to Wit: Jno Walker, George Danael, Wm Lytle, Alex Mebane, Jno Ray, Andrew Burke, Jonathan Lindley, Arch’d Campbell, James Carson, James Moore, James Patterson, Wm F Strudwick, Andrew Murdock, Jane Baldridge, Jno Elliott, Nicholas Gibbs, Benj Lacy, Rob’t Campbell, Sterling Harris, Wm Watters, Wm Ansley, Wm Nunn, Baxter King, Francis Moreland.

Absalom Tatom, Alexander Mebane & Wm Lylte are appointed to ???? the accounts & vouchers of Jno Walker esqr County treasurer, and report the same to next Court.

Jno Sloss esqr is elected Shff high Sheriff of Orange County in the room and stead of Wm McCauley whose time as Shff is expired.

Ordered that Wm McCauley esqr Shff &c be allow’d Twenty five pounds for his Ex officio Services for one year past.

Wm Strudwick comes into Court and quallified as a Justice of the Peace.

???? ????? Vanhook vs Joseph Dorris} Case. Jury sworn, to Wit: Wm Clark, Dan’l McMehan, Wm Walker, Jno Neeley, Patterson Dannel, Wm Smith, Joseph Bernet?, Benj Peelor, Wm Chizenhall, Jno Lindley, Jno Caldwell, Wm Jno Copley. Find for the plaintiffs and assess his damages to £44 & Costs of Suit.

Jesse Embrie vs Henry Thompson} Covenant. Same Jury as above in No 3 - find a Verdict for plaintiff for £182.8.0 & Costs. Motion for a new trial and rule to shew cause. New trial Granted.

20. Smith on demise of Gibson vs Jacob Graves} Ejectm’t. Jury sworn, to Wit: James Gattis, Isaac Dorris, Mathew McCauley, Rob’t Hunter, David Raney, David Mebane, James Kennedy, Rob’t Scoby, Worham Glenn, Jno Tate, Thomas Connelly, Wm Cooper - find the Defen’t guilty of Trespass & Eject land? to his Charge & assess his Damages to one Shilling & 6d Costs, motion for arrest of Judg’t & reasons to be fil’d, motion for an arrest of Judg’t withdrawn, and Motion for a new trial & rule to shew cause. [in left margin:] Cause shewn rule Disch’d.

On motion of Wm Ray Haw river, Ordered that he be discharg’d, he not being the sd person mentioned in the Sci Fa, his hand writing being prov’d by Wm Jonathan Lindley Esq.

Order’d that Drury Honeycut be discharg’d from his recognizance for want of Evidence.

Jno Hall is appointed overseer of the road from the fork above Jno Copleys to the cross road near Riley Vickers in the room of Henry Bunch with the usual hands.

Jno Sloss esqr who is elected Shff in the room of Wm McCauley comes into Court and offers James Carson, Wm Shepperd, James Patterson, Jno G Rencher, Henry Mason, Andrew Gibson & Wm Lytle Sec’ys for the faithful Execution of his office as Shff aforesaid who which Sec’ys are approv’d of by Sterling Harris, Jonathan Lindley & Wm Ansley esqrs Justices present, and the said Jno Sloss esqr Quallified accordingly.

Court adjourns til tomorrow morning 10 o’Clock.

Thursday morning 10 o’Clock 26th May 1791, The Court met according to adjournm’t. Present: Jno Ray, Jonathan Lindley, Wm Lytle, James Patterson} Esqrs.

James Neal is appointed Overseer of the road from Honeycutts Hill to Chatham line in the room in the room of Nathan Dicks.

John Woody is appointed overseer of the road in the room of Joseph Stalsworth from Woodies ferry to James Tinnens.

19. Wm Merrit vs Wm Lytle surv’g partner &c} Debt. Jury sworn, to Witt: Wm Clark, Daniel McMihan, William Walker, Jno Riely?, Patterson Daniel, Wm Smith, Joseph Bennet, Benj Peelor, Wm Chiz[en]hall, Jno Lindley, Jno Caldwell, Jno Copley – find for the Defendant that the suit was bt on a bond sg’d Warrs & Lytle bearing date the 18th of June 1787 for the Sum of one hundred & sixty pounds with sundry Credits & Tested by Rob’t Ferguson, motion for a new trial appeal. [in right margin:] The plaintiff takes into his care & possession the Bond on which this suit was brought.

State vs William Newman} Ind’t Ass’t} Charg’d & plead not guilty. Same Jury as to No 19 Sworn - find the Defendant Guilty as in manner and form charg’d in the Bill of Ind’t.

John McCauley is sworn as deputy to John Sloss esq high Sheriff of the County of Orange.

Benj’n Yeargan appointed one of the Inspectors of the Polls for the insuing Election and Rob’t Scoby appointed the other inspector of the Poll of the said insuing Election.

The Jury who were appointed to lay off a new road at or near the north fork of little river to run south about a quarter of a mile and to intersect with the old road leading from Hillsbo to Pains ordinary Do report that they have laid off the said road according to the order of last Term.

John Hunt is appointed overseer of the road from little river to Barny Grimes in the room of Tho Sutton.

James McAdams Jr is appointed overseer of the road from Trolingers ford to back creek.

Barney Clapp is appointed overseer of the road from the Allimance to the County line in the room of Henry Cope?

Friday morning 27th May 1791, The Court met according to adjournm’t. Present: Jno Ray, Jonathan Lindley, Sterling Harris, And Burke} Esqrs.

64. William O’Neal vs Andrew Burke Esq} appeal. [Jury:] William Clerk, Daniel McMahon, William Walker, Jno Neely, Patterson Danniel, William Smith, Joseph Bennet Ex’d, Benja Peelor, William Chizenhall, Jno Lindley, John Caldwell, Jno Copley - find for the Plaintiff £20.0.0 & Costs.

License is Granted to Wm Courtney esq to keep a Tavern at his House in the town of Hillsbo.

Upon application of Mrs Anne Hooper Widow Personally to this Court praying License to sett free John her Negroe Slave and hearing that the said John Slave has faithfully and Honestly serv’d his late master Wm Hooper esqr Dec’d and also he present mistress the said Anne Hooper, this Court doth adjudge and allow the said service to be meritorious and deserving of freedom, and doth Give leave to the said Anne Hooper to sett free the said Slave accordingly.

Jno Taylor Enoe vs Joseph Moore} appeal. Jury sworn, to Wit: John Breeze, Benjamin Yeargan, Theo Thompson, Rob’t Scoby, Jno McCallum, Joseph Hodge, Jno Scott, Henry Terrel, Dan’l Wasson, Jonathan Nichols, Isaac Jackson, Henry O’Dannel.

Ordered before the Jury sworn that Joseph Moore have leave to pay into Court thirty shillings and that the same be struck out of the Plaintiffs demand in the above cause, and in case the Plaintiffs does recover no more, then the plaintiff is to pay costs but if he recovers more, then the Defendant is to pay all costs. Find a Verdict for the Plaintiff for £1.12.6 & Costs.

[OCPQS 4/350 - May 1791]

On a petition of a number of the Inhabitants of this County presented to this Court for to turn the road which leads from Hillsbo eastwardly on the South side of Enoe to take it along the road that goes to the mineral spring on James Hoggs Land, ordered that the following Jury or any twelve of them lay out and set off the said road agreable to the said petition and make report to next Court. To Wit: Wm Watters esqr, Sterling Harris esq, Wm Lytle esqr, Andre Burke esqr, Wm Nunn, Dav’d Ray, Absalum Tatom esqr, Jno Strayhorn, Wm Crabtree, Joseph Hart, Henry Thompson, James Strayhorn, James Pratt & Richard Fosset.

54. Wm Jamison vs Rob’t Berry} Certiorari. Same Jury as to No [blank] Sworn - find a Verdict for Plaintiff for £1.4.9 & Costs.

The Jury who were appointed to mark out and lay off a road the nearest and best way from Mithcums ??? the nearest and best way in to the new bern road Do return that they have done the same according to the order of the last Term.
