Ordered that Levi Killion an Orphan boy be bound to Joseph Barber till he arrives to the full age of twenty one years &c. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 204.]

Ordered that the road leading from Hillsborough to Little River be equally divided and the same Overseer that formerly was work on that next Hillsborough & James Davison the other half next Little River. Ordered that the hands be equally divided between said two Overseers.

Alexander Hatch is Constable Sworn to attend the Grand Jury this Term.

John Rhodes & Shadrick Forrester came into open Court and qualified as Justices of the Peace.

Jacob Councilman is appointed Constable for St Asaphs District for one year &c.

Rich’d Cates is appointed Guardian for Edward Edwards & entered into Bond with Archer Campbell esquire &c. [See also litigation OCPQS 4/532, removal from guardianship OCPQS 4/476 & OCPQS 4/485, accounting OCPQS 5/68.]

Ordered that the road which Mr Bennehan Petitioned for be turned agreeable to the return of the said Jury &

Ordered that James Carson & William Shepperd esq be appointed to Settle with Robert Scoby Guardian of Solomon & Stephen Debow orphans of ???? Debow deceased, for the year 1791 & 1792 & make return next Court. [But they were unsuccessful in getting Scoby to account, see OCPQS 5/95.]

Ordered that a Supercedias & Certiorari to William Nunn, Andrew Burke esq & Harris Grisham Constable to bring ??? the papers had and obtained agt Spencer Vaughan & Stay a all further prosecution till the same be heard in our county Court &c.

[OCPQS 4/453 - May 1793]

Ordered that William Cabe, David Strayhorn &  and James Crabtree be appointed Patrolers for Saint Maries District.

John Thompson Son of Samuel is appointed overseer of the road from Burnsides ford on Haw Creek to Thompson Mill on Haw River [Saxapahaw] in the room of Robert Scoby.

On Motion of William Nash esq Atto for Spencer Vaughan in the Certiorari Wm Nunn esq agt Spencer Vaughan, the Defendant Spencer Vaughan pays into Court six shillings & six pence, which he considers was what he owes the said Nunn which was tendered in open Court before the Magistrate &c.

Ordered that John Thompson, Wm Hall Constables and David Allison be appointed Patrolers for the District of Hillsborough &c.

William Rhodes Jr is appointed Constable for St Marks District & at the same time qualified accordingly &c.

Sam’l Woods is acquitted for not attending as a Juror at court for reasons shewn the court.

[OCPQS 4/454 - May 1793]

Agreeable to an Order last Term for for turning around through George Newtons plantation. Ordered that there be a road kept open but not a publick road & William Cain being displeased therewith prays an appeal to the Superior Court. [Evidently this language was replaced by the entry at OCPQS 4/471.]

Benjamin Dixon is appointed Constable for the District of Caswell and at the same time entered into Bond & qualified accordingly.

Isaac Dorris is appointed Constable for one year &c and qualified accordingly.

Ordered that Thomas Whithead be appointed Constable for Caswell District and enters into Bond with James Baker &c.

James Mebane came into open Court and qualified as an executor to the last Will & Testament of Alexander Mebane Senior Deceased &c. [See OWB B/216.]

Ordered that George Johnston have leave to build a Mill on his own Land on newhope creek agreeable to the Petition of said Johnston &c &c. [See Dunaway’s Mill Records, page 9 and Dunaway’s separate book on the Johnston Mill. This site is now the Triangle Land Conservancy’s Johnston Mill Preserve.]

Ordered that an Orphan boy named William Woods age fifteen year old seventh day of August next be bound to James Derixson until he arrives to the full age of twenty one years. Samuel Thompson is appointed Constable for one year in Hillsborough District and enters into Bond with Wm Lytle & Walter Alves esqrs and at the same time qualified accordingly.

Ordered that friday be set aside for States business at that the Clerk give notice to the Sheriff to advertise the same at the court house & other publick places within this county and that all Causes be tried as they shall appear upon Docket.

State vs Willis Cooper} Indictment, submits & fined 6d & Costs Suit

Thomas Latta Jr is allowed 389 acres of land for which he is exempt from paying taxes for the year 1792.

Jonathan Lindley esquire came into open court and qualified as a processioner.

Robert Hodge & Jno McDannel excused by the Court from attending as Jurors.

James Tate is appointed Overseer of the road from David Mebanes to the branch between Widow Nelson and Baxters old Place in the room of Edward Wilson.

[OCPQS 4/461 - May 1793]

Letters of administration heretofore having been granted to Matthew Woods on the estate of James Oneal deceased are revoked because it appears he has no creditors & that Letters of Administration be granted to James Green in right to his wife Rachael Green in her right Giving Suf Security & at the same time qualified according to Law. Appeal prayed & granted for reasons shewn the court.

Marshal Stroud comes into open court and chooses John Stroud his Guardian and enters into Bond accordingly.

Ordered that Lasarus Tilley have notice to appear next Court & shew cause why he shall not pay for the maintenance of a Bastard Child gotten by him on the body of Elizabeth James. [See Bastardy Bonds, image 483, 541 & 545.]

Ordered that Peter Grisclard? have leave to retail Liquors at his now dwelling house in Hillsborough at the same time enters into Bond with Joseph Dixon his security in the Sum of five hundred pounds.

William Courtney Senior hath Obtained an Order court to keep a Tavern at his new dwelling house in the Town of Hillsborough.

Walter Alves esq is appointed processioner for St Maries District and at the same time qualified agreeable to Law.

James Christmas esq is appointed processioner for the District of Hillsborough.

David Mebane is appointed Processioner for the District of Orange.

William Ray is appointed processioner for the Districts of Chatham & St Asaphs.

Jonathan Lindley esq is appointed processioner for the district of Caswell and qualified accordingly.

William McCauley esq is appointed processioner for the District of St Thomases.

Hardy Hurdle esq is appointed to receive the List of Taxable property in the District of Chatham.

Sterling Harris esq is appointed to receive the List of Taxable property for Hillsborough District.

Ordered the Sheriff of Orange be allowed the Sum of fifty pounds for ex officio Services for one year past. Ordered that the county Treasurer pay the same.

Ordered the Clerk of Orange County Court be allowed the Sum of fifty pounds [for] ex officio services for one year past. Ordered that the county Treasurer pay the same.

Ordered that John Taylor esq have leave to keep a Tavern at his now dwelling house in the Town of Hillsborough and offers John Sloss & Morgan Hart Securities which now approved of &c.

Ordered that John McCauley have leave to keep a Tavern at his now Dwelling house in Hillsbo and offers Wm McCauley esq Security which was approved of Accordingly &c. [License revoked at OCPQS 5/559.]

[OCPQS 4/467 - May 1793]

Thomas Carrington is appointed Overseer of the road from Graves ford on little River to Abraham Davises. Ordered that the convenient hands work on the Same and keep said road in good repair as the Law directs.

James Trousdale is appointed Overseer of the road from Butlers ford to the ford on the great Alamance in the room of Francis Holt. Ordered that the usual hands work on the same.

John Cole is appointed Overseer of the road from Cates spring branch to Eno River in the room of Thomas Hor[n]e.

Robert Smith is appointed Overseer of the road in the room of James Clarke from said Clarkes to the fork of the road.

James Godfrey is appointed Overseer of the road from the Island ford on Haw river to John Wheelers in the room of Joseph Holmes. Ordered that the usual hands work on the same.

Thomas Armstrong is appointed Overseer of the road [from] Joseph Collinses to Hillsborough crossing Enoe at Dickies ford in the room of Thomas Bane.

Robert Tucker is appointed Overseer of the road from Wake to the cross road above Samuel Mays in the room of Richard Lee.

Daniel Cotner is appointed Overseer of the road from Dickie? Cabbin to Randolph line in the room of Christian Coble.

Robert Tinnen is appointed Overseer of the road from Francis Wilkinsons fence to the upper part of County Line road called Barnes road in the room of Wm Clark. Ordered that the following hands work on the same, to wit: Wm Hall & hands, Bothius Cook, James Lapsley, David Fossett, Fran Wilkinson, Daniel Wilkinson, Wm Wilkinson, Wm Clarke, Rich’d Lake, David Clarke, John Richards.

James Newlin is appointed Overseer of the road from Maries Creek to the county line. Ordered that the following hand work on the same, to wit: Joshua Lambe, Henry Lewis, Thos Baker, Wm Andrew, John Millison, Wm Carter, Rob’t Morrison, Tho Andrew, George Madden.

James Woody is appointed Overseer of the road from the river at Thompsons Mill to Maries creek. Ordered that the following hands work on the same (to wit): Jo Woody, Sam’l McMullen, Jno Woody, Lewis Roach, Jno Atkinson, Nath’l Newlin, Geo Sherridon, Jno Shy.

Ordered that John & James Mitchell have leave to build a Grist Mill on their own Lands on Newhope creek agreeable to the petition of said Mitchell &c &c.

Thomas Rippey is appointed Overseer of the road from Stoney creek to Hutchesons in the room of Matthew Rippey. Ordered that the following hands work on the same &c &c Edward Rippey, John Cooke, Edward Cooke, David Cooke, John McCracken, Rob’t Turner, James Rippey, half Wm Mebanes [slaves], Matthew Rippey.

Ordered that William Harvey have leave to turn the road around a piece of new ground he hath on the road that leads from Barnet Troxdales to Chatham Line agreeable to the Petition of the said Harvey &c &c.

[OCPQS 4/471 - May 1793]

Agreeable to an Order Court, the Jury met and was duly sworn agreeable to the Petition, and say on their Oaths that the road from little River meeting house to Cains Mill starting at said meeting house, keeping the old road to the corner of Robert Walkers field, then the nearest and best way to the ford, opposite Wm Walkers Plantation on little River, then the usual way to said Mill, Given under our hands & Seals this 26 day of March 1793 &c.

George Newton appeared personally in court and said the road would run through his plantation and damag’d him very much, Tis therefore Ordered by the Court that a road be kept open but not a publick road. Wm Cain being dissatisfied therewith prayed an appeal to our Superior Court of Law to be held for the District in the town of Hillsboro on the 6th day October next which is Granted & he enters into bond with David Ray Security in the Sum of two hundred & fifty pounds agreeable to Law.
