Ordered that Margret Crayton daughter of Elizabeth Wells now

to Levi Gifford until she arrive to the age of Eighteen years to learn the art

Elizabeth Horn vs Asa Benton [Asa Burton?]} On Motion,
Ordered that the Def’t pay unto the plaintiff the Sum of Twenty Seven pounds
for the Maintenance of a Child of which the said Defendant is charged of being
the father viz Seven pounds immediately and the residue in four annual payts to
commence on the 1st day of February 1802. [See Bastardy Bonds,
images 909, 912 & 914.]

Wednesday Morning 27th, Court met according to
adjournment. Present: Wm McCauley, James Baldridge, Isaac Holt} Esqs.
Ordered that David Ray, Catlet Campbell & John Casey be
and they are hereby appointed to settle with Sterling Harris Treasurer of
public Buildings and report to this Term.
John Walker is excused for his non attendance as a Juror by
reasons shewn the Court on affidavit.

James Williams vs Thomas Watts} Appeal. Jury charged to wit:
Wm Bradford, Geo Madden, Wm Riley, Wm Hogan, Wm Whitted, Tho Holloway, Robert
Eaton, Wm Palmer, John Walker, Tho Laycock, Wm Laycock, James Ray. Find the
Defendant did assume and that after allowing set off there is a balance due the
plff to the amount of £2.6.7 & Costs. On Motion, Judgment against the Sec’s
on appeal.

James Mitchel vs Charles Seat? & ???} Sci fa, Nul tut
record, payt, release, death of prin. The Court adjudges there is such a record.
Jury charged as in No [blank]. Find no pay’t or release & that the principal
is not dead. Judgment according to Sci fa.
Nathaniel Carrington is appointed Guardian to William Evans
and enters into Bond with Tyre Duke and Samuel Evins his Securities in the Sum
of £500.
Administration on the Estate of George Laws Dec’d is granted
to Susannah Laws who enters into Bond with Wyatt Fuzzle James Walker
& Wm Carpenter who enter into Bond in the Sum of £500.

Ordered that Susannah Laws admx of Geo Laws Dec’d have leave
to sell the personal Estate of her Intestate.
The State vs Robert Allen} recog to appear & answ at
this Term to a charge of being a Vagrant. The Defendant on motion of his
Council is discharged by the Court upon paying the Cost, The Court being of
opinion that he is not regularly before them.
The State vs John Sutton} Ind’t Petit Larceny, charged &
pleads not Guilty. Jury sworn to wit: Wm Bradford, Geo Maddin, Wm Riley, John
McCullock, Wm Whitted, Tho Holloway, Robert Eaton, Wm Palmer, John Walker, Tho
Laycock, Wm Laycock, James Ray. Find the Defendant Guilty in manner & form
as charged in the Bill of Ind’t.

Wm Hogan is fined 10/ peremptorily for his nonattendance as
a Juror at the call of the Shff.
The State vs John Sutton} Convicted of Larceny. Ordered that
the said John Sutton be carried hence to the Public Whipping Post & there
receive Ten lashes on his bade back & stand committed until the Costs of
the pros are paid and that the Sheriff carry this Order into Execution.
Ordered that Taylor Duke pay unto Chancy Mangum the Sum of
Twenty Seven pounds for the maintenance of a child of which he stands the
reputed father viz two pounds down, £5 on the 1st of April next and
£5 annually for four years thereafter. [See Bastardy Bonds, images 893 &

Ordered that John Cabe Esq and Walter Alves,
James Moore, Hugh Cain & Allen Cain lay off & allot to Susanna Laws
Widow & relict of Geo Laws Dec’d one years provision & make report to

Administration on
the Estate of Mary Wood dec’d is granted to William Henly the Husband of one of
the daughters of the said Dec’d who enters into Bond with Walter Alves &
Joseph Brittain in the Sum of £200.

Ordered that Charles Rhodes Son of Lotty
Rhodes now of the age of 5 years on the 25th March last be bound to
James Rainey to learn the art & mistery of a farmer. [See Apprentice Bonds,

Charlotte Rhodes mentioned at OCPQS 6/273?]

Manning Dec’d is granted to Sarah Manning his widow & relict & enters
into Bond with Joseph Brittain & Samuel Southerland her Securities in the
Sum of £500.
Ordered that Abram
Anderson Esq & Wm Chizenhall, James Wood & Joseph Wood be and they are
hereby appointed to lay off & allot to Sarah Manning Widow of Charles

[OCPQS 6/194 - May 1801]
Enoch Groom Son of Robert Groom Dec’d of lawful age comes
into court & chooses John Groom his Guardian who enters into Bond with Luke
Pendergast and John Ray his Securities in the Sum of £200.
On Motion, Ordered that Nathaniel Harris pay unto Elizabeth
Waggoner the Sum of Twenty Seven pounds viz Seventeen pounds immediately &
£5 on the 25th of May next and £5 on the 25th May
thereafter for the maintenance of the first child that he got on the body of said
Elizabeth Waggoner. [See Bastardy Bonds, images 831, 860, 859, 903, 905, 907
& 911, also OCPQS 6/41 & OCPQS 6/115.]
On Motion, Ordered that Nathaniel Harris pay unto Elizabeth
Waggoner the Sum of Twenty Seven pounds viz Seven pounds immediately, five pounds
on the first of August 1802 & five pounds annually thereafter until the
whole Sum be paid for the maintenance of the second child. [See Bastardy Bonds,
images 831, 860, 859, 903, 905, 907 & 911, also OCPQS
6/41 & OCPQS 6/115.]
Waggoner, Elizabeth - Elizabeth Waggoner’s daughter was born
25 Aug 1799 and she identified Nathaniel Harris as the father on 29 May 1800.
He signed the bond on 25 Feb 1801. See images 831, 860, 859 & 903.

Ordered that Samuel Turrentine Shff &c be allowed the
Sum of fifty pounds for his Ex officio services as Sheriff for the last year.
Ordered that John Taylor Clerk &c be allowed the Sum of
Fifty pounds for his Ex officio Services as Clk during the last year.
The County Trustee is allowed 3 p cent for receiving & 2
p cent for paying out Expences by him during the last year.

Ordered that the Sheriff collect the Sum of one Shilling on
each poll, one shilling on every hundred pounds Value of Town property &
four pence on every hundred acres of Land as a Tax to discharge the monies due
for the public buildings. Ordered that the Sheriff collect the same with the
Taxes of the year 1800.
Ordered that the Sheriff collect the Sum of 2/ on each poll,
2/ on each hundred pounds Value of Town property & 8d on every hundred acre
of Land as a County Tax for the present year.
Ordered that the Sheriff collect the Sum of 9d on every
poll, 9d on every three hundred acres of Land & 9d on every hundred pounds
Value of Town property for the payment of County Court Jurors.
Sterling Harris is elected Treasurer of Public Buildings for
the present Year and enters into Bond with William Kirkland, James Phillips
& Jehu Whitted.

Samuel Turrentine Esq is elected Sheriff of Orange County
and enters into Bond with James Baldridge, William Kirkland, Catlet Campbell,
James Walker, Walter Alves his Securities & took the Oaths necessary for
his qualification.
Charles Christmas comes into Court and renews his bond as
Surveyor of the County & offers William F Strudwick, David Mebane, Jno
Edwards & William Hogan as his Securities who are approved of by the court.
Thomas Whitted is appointed Deputy Shff and qualifies
accordingly.
