State of North Carolina, At a County Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions began and held for the County of Orange in the Town of Hillsborough on the 4th Monday of November being the 28th day of said Month and Year 1791. Present: Sterling Harris, And Burke, James Baldridge} Esqrs.

The Grand Jury impanneled & Sworn, to Wit: Jno Allen Foreman, James Lapsley, Alexander Kirkpatrick, James Craig, James Thompson, Wm Dunnigan, Wm Clarke, Charles Dunnigan, James Haisting, Jno Wheelor, Jno Albright, Wm Armstrong, Barnebas Grimes, Samuel Piper, Jno McCulloch.

Wm Trousdale sworn to attend this Grand Jury as Constable this Term.

Thomas Bowls, Jno Allison, Wm Tate, and Sherwood Dunnigan, James Robinson are Excused from their attendance as Jurors at this Term by reason of their not being freeholders.

??? Ray Capt is appointed overseer of the road from ??? Allimance to Whitheads Creek in the room of Jno McDannel.

Dempsey Honeycutt is appointed overseer of the road from Mallachi Foglemans branch to Honeycutts Hill in the room of Jacob Albright.

Jno Sloss Esqr Sheriff of Orange exhibited the list of insolvents in the District of Chatham for the year 1790 and is allow’d for 694 Acres of Land & 5 Polls.

Wm Tate Collector of taxes in the District of Orange exhibits his list of Insolvents and is allowed for the year 1790 £8.13.1.

On the affidavit of Wm Love & motion of Wm Nash esquire, Ordered that a Supercedias and Certiorari issue to Wm Roney esq, James Bowers Constable and James Burch to bring up the Warrant Judgment and all other papers touching the same which was obtained by the said James Burch ag’t the said Wm Love.

The Court Adjourns til tomorrow morning 10 o’Clock.

Tuesday morning 10 o’Clock 29th Nov 1791 Court met according to Adjournment. Present: Wm Watters, Sterling Harris, And Burke} Esqrs.

James Haisting & Barnabas Grimes two of the ??? Jury are fined 5 each for not attending at the Sheriff call.

Jno McCallum, Rob’t Stewart, Joseph Holms, Rob’t Hunter, Rob’t Hodge & James McClelland are fined for not attending as Jurors on the original pannel agreeable to act of assembly.

James McCulloch excused from his fine for not attending as a Jurors for reasons Shewn the Court on oath.

On application of the Exrs of Jacob Deblin Dec’d to bind out the children of the Dec’d, The Court on deliberation rejects the sd application and order that the said Exrs pay to James Carrigan.

Rob’t Hodge is excused from his fine for not attending as a Juror at the call of the Shff and also excused from attending at this Term by reason of his being Sick.

Ordered that Wm Jean of 15 years be bound to Arch’d Campbell ??? of to learn the art of a Hat[t]er. [Bond not found.]

Ordered that Jno Jean be bound an orphan boy of the age of Eleven years May Term 1790 be bound to Lewis Kirk to learn the art & mistery of a Hat[t]er. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 145.]

Administration of the estate of James Waggoner is Granted to Catherine Waggoner at the same time she entered into Bond with Rob’t Berry Jr [blank] Sec’ys in the sum of £50.

Jno Holden is appointed overseer of the road from Wm Cains to Brantons old place in the room of Jno Cain.

Rob’t Grey is appointed overseer of the road new road from Allisons to Gen’l Persons begining at Griffiths spring branch and along by Greys House on the ?best road tract to Caswell County line. Ordered that the convenient hands not engag’d on any other road work under him, and they keep the same in good repair, taking care to measure & mark the distance as the Law directs.

Thursday morning 10 o’Clock 1st December 1791, Court met according to adjournment. Present: Wm Watters, Sterling Harris, And Burke} Esqrs.

Ordered that a Pillory & Stocks be built on the public Lott in the town of Hillsboro and Sterling Harris, Wm Lytle & Andrew Burke esqrs or either two are appointed to Lett and Superintend the building of the same.

26. Thomas Farmer vs Absalum Tatom Esq} T A B. Jury sworn, to Wit: James Anderson, Jno McDannel, Sam Wood, Benjamin Picket, Nicholas Holt, Dav’d Strayhorn, James Hart, James McCulloch, Jesse Miller, Alex Russel, Jno Turrentine, Wm Cooper. Find for the plaintiff & assess his Damages to 20/ & Costs.

8. Grear & Ford vs Tate & Scoby} Cov’ts. Same Jury as above sworn. Verd’t for £46.10.0 & Costs.

Wm Hooper Jr vs Wm Courtney Jr} T V A. Same Jury as in No 26 Sworn - find a Verd’t for Defend’t.

Walter Alves is appointed overseer of the road from little river to Barnabas Grimes in the room of Dav’d? Hunt.

James McCulloch one of the original pannel being solemnly called by the Sheriff & failing to attend is fined ten shillings absolutely. fine p’d into Court.

Rob’t Hunter one of the original pannel who was fined for not attending on the Original pannel now appears and is excused from his fine and attendance for reasons shewn on Oath.

The Governor vs Isaac Clark} for Int on the Arrearages of taxes the year 1788, Plea Gen’l issue. Verd’t for £124.9.4 & Costs. Atto & Clerks fee paid. Stay ??? til ordered.

Stay Ex til 15 days before the next Court.
