John Augustus Williams produced a Licence from the
Honourable Judges of our Superior Court of Law to practice as an Attorney in
the several county courts of Pleas & within this state. Ordered that he be
admited accordingly & at same time Qualified.
Administration of the Estate of Jesse Wells deceased is
Granted to Joseph Wells & Nathan Wells on entering into Bond with John
Wheelor & Levi Guilford [Levi Gifford] Securities in the Sum of One

William Jackson Jr comes into Open Court & resigns his
office as Constable.
James Watson Jr is appointed Overseer of the road in the
room of James Wilson from Person line to Thomas Griffiths spring branch.
Ordered that the usual hands work on the same &c.
George Johnston is appointed Overseer of the road in the
room of John Allen from Mrs Mebanes to Samuel Shaws &c.
Ordered that Sterling Hinton who is aged 13 years last
August be bound to Daniel Conklin to learn the trade, are & mistery of a
Carpenter. [See Apprentice Bonds, image 250 which looks more like Sterling
Hilton.]

Ordered that John Linch be bound to William Parks to learn
the art, trade & mistery of a shoe maker, the said John being aged five

Thomas Rhodes is appointed Overseer of the road from the
cross roads at William Wallaces to Ellibers creek in the room of Shadrick
Forrest.
Peter Willis comes into Court & chooses Thomas Snipes
esquire & Sarah Willis his mother as Guardian on entering into Bond
agreeable [to] Law with Christopher Barbee & Mann Paterson in the Sum of

Licence is Granted to Wm Courtney Senior to Keep an Ordinary
at his now dwelling house in Hillsboro & offers Will Lytle Security who was
approved of by the Court.
Elizabeth Dick came into Court and entered into Bond with
James Patterson & Jno Hawkins Sec’y in the Sum of One thousand pounds for
the fruitful Discharge of her Guardianship as Guardian to Mary Dick to which
Guardianship the said Elizabeth was appointed last Court. [See also

which was approved of by the Court.
Abner B Bruce comes into is appointed Clerk of this
Court & offers Maj Tatom Absalom Tatom & William Lytle esqrs as
Security who was approved of by the Court & entered into Bond accordingly
which Bond is delivered to William Courtney Chairman.

George Ailsworth call upon his Subpoena & fail’d to
appear is fined agreeable to Act of Assembly. Mr Ailsworths fine remited.
James Boyle was called upon his Subpoena & Failed to
appear is fined agreeable to Act of Assembly in case made. Releav’d by the
Court for reasons shewn.
Daniel Fisher produced an a licence form the Hon’ble the
Judges of our Superior Court of Law to practice as an Atto in the several
county courts within this State & qualified accordingly.
John Holt is appointed Overseer of the road from the
Allemance to Butlers ford on Haw River [Swepsonville].
30 Wm Upchurch vs Abraham C Davis} Same Jury as in No 26
Impannelled & Sworn, find there is no payment that the Plff has not
released & there is no set off & fin the value of the Virginia money to

35. Wm Mebane vs Andrew Burke} . The same Jury as in No 33
Sworn, find the Bond to be the Act & Deed of the Defendant and assess the
Plffs Damages to £8.10 & Costs.
36. Wm Nash vs John Allison} The Same Jury Impannelled &
Sworn, find the Bond not paid, there is no payment & no set off &
assess the Plffs Damages to £1.0.11 & 6d Costs and Appeal pray’d &
granted, Reasons filed & Bond entered into agreeable to Law.
Pursuant to a Writ Ad Lunatico Issued from this Court to
enquire into the Lunacy of John Morgan, the Jury do say on their Oaths that the
said John Morgan is a lunatic & Incapable of Transacting his own business.
The Court therefore appoints Benjamin Yeargan as Guardian to the said John
Morgan on entering into Bond with Walter Alves & Jno G Rencher Securitys in
the Sum of One thousand Pounds.
Goin Barbee & Joseph Barbee comes into court and enters
into Bond & qualified as Executors to this Last Will & testament of

F. Witness Jurors for the Defendants in this Suit Jno Carrington, Edward

Mulholland Surveyor. Jurors for the Plaintiff in this suit: David Allison, Wm
Woods, Rob’t Hodge, Jno G Rencher, Jno Latta Jr, Alex’r Boreland & John Ray
Sr, if all the Jurors should not attend & there is equal number of each
party they consent that is shall be sufficient [sic].
Ordered that the Sheriff of Orange County Hire out a Negroe
Mutta boy by the name of Laban Taban now in Jail to the highest Bidder until

Isaiah Browning who is charged of having begotten a base
born Child on the body of [blank, but apparently Violet Psalter] comes into
court & offers Jno G Rencher & Thomas Horne as Securities who were approved
of by the court to keep the county of Orange Indemnified by reason of said

John Hunt is appointed Overseer of the road from Barnabus
Grimes to Little river in the room of Thomas Hunt. Ordered that the usual hands
work on the same &c.
John Cain, Eli Woods, James Walker, George Laws, William
Laws, Hugh Cain, Edward Harris Patrollers in saint Maries District.
Goin Barbee is appointed Guardian to Christopher Barbee who
enters into Bond with Zachariah Herndon & Joseph Barbee.

Robert Hall, Jno Thompson, Joseph Boothe, Joseph Tate, Jesse Lynch, Tho Hart,
Tho Durham, Enoch Collins. The State vs Samuel Allen} Indictment, charged &
pleads not Guilty. Jury Impannelled & Sworn, find the Def’t Guilty as in
manner & form charged in the Indictment, fined 20/.

The State vs James Christmas} . Jury Impannelled &
Sworn, find Defendant Guilty as in Manner & form charge in the Bill of
Indictment, fined 25/.
Samuel Thompson Constable Records his Ear mark a Swallow for
in each Ear.
3. Augustus Benton vs Benjamin Smith} plead & try or
Demur Special Plea on abatement that Ben Smith the Defendant Ben Smith the
is summoned as Guarnashee in a suit Harousey against A Benton & is not
declared nor is not discharged. Special Demurer that no affidavit or other
matter shewed the truth of the Plea at the time it was received and that the
plea was pleaded after the impartenced? Plea overruled by the court on
argument.
The Court appoints Wm McCauley & Thomas Watts to Examine
& settle the accounts & Vouchers of Francis Wilkinson as Executor of
the Estate of [blank] Mangrom Deceased and make return to Court.
Administration of the Estate of William Kelly Deceased is
granted to Enoch Collins, it appearing he is the greatest Creditor and enters
into Bond with William McCauley & Samuel Thompson Securities in the Sum of
Four hundred pounds at the same time the said Collins Qualified accordingly.

Ordered that the Sheriff Summons the following Jury to view
and lay off a road Rodgers fence to Fridles lanes past Ridges Mill: George Loy,
John Loy, John Loyd, John Albright, Henry Albright, Nicholas Moser, Henry Cook,
Obed Green, Aron Sharp, David Eveland, Henry Long, James H Ray, Henry Ivy.
John G Rencher Collector of Taxes for Saint Thomases
District is allowed 1699 acres of Land & 16 Polls as Insolvents for the
year 1793.
John Sloss esquire Sheriff of Orange is allowed 670 Acres of
Land and Forty nine Polls 49 polls as Insolvents for the year 1793.
James Nelson Collector of Saint Maries, Saint Marks & St
Thomas Districts for the year 1791 is allowed 2251 acres of Land & 24 Polls
as Insolvents for that year.
John Connally is appointed Overseer of the road from flat
Rock to Chatham Line and that the hands formerly belonging to that part of the
road work on the same.

Friday Morning Court met according to Adjournment. Present: Wm
Courtney, Wm Lytle, James Baldridge, Andrew Murdock} Esquires.
John Thompson is appointed Guardian to Mary & Rebeccah
Thompson & enters in Bond with Abram Thompson & David Gilston Securities
in the Sum of 600 pounds, that is to say three hundred pounds each.
Joseph Stubbins is appointed Overseer of the road from the
Town of Hillsborough to Nelsons Branch. Ordered that the usual hands work on
the same.
John Faddis comes into open Court & qualified as Deputy
Sheriff under Joseph Hodge high Sheriff of Orange County.
Ordered that the following Jury be appointed to view and
alter the road leading from Hillsborough to Fayette Ville crossing Morgans
creek at Matthew McCauleys Mill and fix on a spot to build a bridge across said
creek, to wit: James Nelson, John G Rencher, John Strain, Sackville Brewer,
John Gattis, Baxter King, William King, William Andrus, David Hogan, Alexand
Strain, William Partain, Edmond Jones and that they report to next court. [See

At an Election held for Entry taker in the County of Orange,
Present: A Tatom, Jno Thompson, James Christmass, James Chason?, Wm Courtney,
Wm Ray, A Murdock, Empson Bird, Hardy Hurdle, Sterling Harris, Wm Nunn, Jno
Sloss, Wm Watters, James Moore, Wm McCauley, James Baldridge, Robert Campbell,
Geo Dannel, Wm Lytle, Benjamin Lacy, Wm Rainey.
William Raney is Elected Entrytaker for the county of Orange
and enters into Bond with William Ray & Hardy Hurdle & Andrew Murdock
Security agreeable to Law. Wm Courtney, William Lytle & Andrew Murdock Esqr
present &c.
Samuel Hill is appointed Constable in the Town of Hillsbo
until next court & enters in Bond with Sterling Harris & William
Lockheart & Eli Hill Securities in the [sum] of Two hundred & Fifty
pounds agreeable to Law, the same Justices present.
Ordered that the Clerk advertise that the Constables of
Orange come into Court on Friday this Term next of Court and renew their
Bonds as Constables agreeable to act of assembly.

William Courtney, Henry Thompson & David Ray are
appointed an appointed [sic] to assess the Town property in Hillsbo for the
present year.
Thomas Mulhollan is appointed County Surveyor for Orange
& offers William McCauly, Jno Sloss & Henry Thompson Securities who
were approved of by the court. Wm Courtney, Andrew Murdock & James
Baldridge & William Lytle & Empson Bird esquires present.
The Governor vs Jesse Gilbert and other} on motion of
William Duffy & on the affidavit of Col William Shepperd, It is considered
by the Court that William May Sheriff of Orange Anson be fined Ni Si
agreeable to Act of Assembly for failing to Return a Writ of Fieri Facias which
was returnable to this Term & that Sci Fa Issue according.
James Moore Returns his List of Taxable Property for the
present year 1794.
Robert Harris is appointed Overseer of the road from
Granville to little River.

Ordered that the Sheriff Summons the following persons as

Agreeable to the Petition of sundry Inhabitants for the
county of Orange to lay off a road from William Galbreaths Ferry by Joseph
Hodges then the nearest and best way to the University, Ordered that the
Sheriff Summons the following Jury to view and lay off the same (to wit): James
Clendennin, Nath’l McLemore, Thomas Howard, Rob’t Moore, Thomas Brewer, Rich’d
Christmas, William Andrews, Ezekial Brewer, Sackfield Brewer, William Kirk,

Riggs ford to the on little river to the cross roads at Jackson Malt
house. Ordered that the usual hands work on the same.
William Railey is appointed overseer of the road from Cates
spring branch to Enoe River in the room of John Cole.
Lewis Durham is appointed overseer of the road from Chatham
line to Frederick Loyds. Ordered that the following hands work on the same (to
wit): Alexander Hatch, Lysias Durham, Wm Durham, John Durham, Anderson Stroud,
Sarah Willis, John Jolly, Mark Durham, Stephen Justice, Edmond Harden, Charles Durham,
