The Execution of a Deed from John Thompson & Ruth his
wife, Samuel Thompson & Margaret his wife, Sarah Woody, John Crawford &
Ruth his wife, Samuel Bartley & Mary his wife to James Davis for five
sevenths of one hundred & sixty seventy acres of Land lying in
Bottetourt County, State of Virginia was duly acknowledged in open Court by the
Subscribers thereto and it appearing to the Court that four of the Subscriber
thereto, to wit Ruth Thompson, Margaret Thompson, Ruth Crawford & Mary
Barlty are Feme Coverts, therefore it was ordered by the Court that Samuel
Child Esqr one of the Court then sitting be appointed to take the Private
Examination of the said Feme Coverts touching & concerning the Execution of
the said Deed. Whereupon the said Samuel Child Esqr retired from the Court, and
afterward returned & reported to the Court that he had examined them &
each of them privily & apart from their said Husbands and that they
acknowledged that they had executed the said Deed freely & of their own
accord without fear of, or compulsion by their said husbands. Whereupon the
Court ordered the said Deed to be certified which was done accordingly. [Certified

holding an Inquest on the Body of Bella a Negro late the property of Samuel

The Execution of the last Will and Testament of Joseph
Hamilton dec’d was duly proved in open Court by the Oath of Robert Gregston a
Subscribing Witness thereto & Ordered to be recorded – at the same time
Archibald Hamilton & William Picket appeared & qualified. Martha
Hamilton Widow of Joseph Hamilton Dec’d comes into Court and enters her dissent
from the Will of said Joseph Hamilton dec’d. [See OWB D/540.]

into Bond with John Nichols & Samuel Woods Sec’s in the Sum of £200 each.
It appearing to the Satisfaction of the Court that there is
just Cause to believe that Charles Stephens is a Lunatic, It is therefore
Ordered that a Writ issues to the Sheriff of Orange Commanding him to Summon a
Jury to enquire into the State of the minds of the said Charles Stephens
whether he be an Idiot of Lunatic & if a Lunatic at which time his Lunacy
commenced.

Ordered that William Moore & John Sykes Admrs with the
Will annexed of Thomas Cate (Preacher) Dec’d [OWB D/490] be allowed 5 P Cent on
Settlement of their Acco.
Ordered that Benjamin Hester pay to Rhodah Johnston the Sum
of twenty seven pounds as follows: Seven pounds instanter, five pounds on 21st
March next and five pounds annually until the whole is paid for the Support
& Maintenance of a child of which she hath lately been delivered and of

to build a Mill. The report of the Commissioners returned in this Case is
Ordered to be recorded, as follows, to wit:
State of North Carolina, Orange County} Agreeable to the
within Order, We James Morrow, William Morrow, Alexander Pickard & John
Bonner Freeholders have this the 23d day of August 1817, proceded to view &
lay off an acres of the land of the said James Millican & Elias Millican as
directed in the said Order & have laid off & marked one acre in the
manner following, to wit: Beginning at a Birch on the East side of Cain Creek,
running Northwardly Eight Poles to a Dogwood stake having a Hickory, Black Oak

Whereupon it is Ordered, adjudged & decreed by the Court
that James Millican & Elias Millican have leave to build a Water grist Mill
at the Place in the said return mentioned and that they pay to Samuel Child
& Richard Ashe Petitioners in this Case the Sum of Eight Dollars according
tot said Report. Whereupon the said James Millican and Elias Millican paid into
Court the said eight Dollars for the said Samuel Child & Richard Ashe. It
is further Ordered that they pay the Costs of this Petition.
Ordered that James Riggs aged 5 years the 16th
day of April 1819 be bound to William Nichols to learn the Art and mistery of a

The Execution of [a] Power of Attorney from Ferona Reich,
Christopher Rich, Matthew Reich, Ferrera Reich, Elizabeth Reich, Christian
Reich, Lewis Rich, John Reich, Catharine McCadams & Michael Rich to
Benjamin Reich being proved to the Satisfaction of the Court by the Certificate
of Nathaniel Shober Notary Public for Stokes County & under his seal &
office that Ferona Reich, Christopher Reich, Matthew Rich, Ferona Reich Junr
& Elizabeth Reich sons [and daughters] of the parties to the said Power of
Attorney has appeared before & duly acknowledged the Execution of the same,
and the said Michael Reich also appeared in this Court and then duly
acknowledged that he had Executed the same, And the Execution of the said Power
by the said Christian Reich, Lewis Reich & Catharine McCadams being duly
proved by the Oath of the said Michael Reich, It is therefore Ordered that the
said Power of Attorney and the Certificate endorsed thereon be registered. [See

The Execution of a Deed from James Ashley & Charity
Ashley his [wife] to Thomas Wilson was duly proved in Open Court as to the Execution
of the same by Ashley by the Oath of James Ashley Willie P Mangum a
subscribing Witness thereto. Whereupon the Court appointed John Rhodes Esqr to
take the private examination of the sd Charity Ashley privily &
apart from her said Husband toughing [sic] the Execution of the said Deed, Who
reported to the Court that he had examined the said Charity Ashley Privily
& apart from her said husband and that she had acknowledged to him that she
had executed the same freely and of her own accord, without fear of or compulsion
by her said husband, therefore Ordered by the Court that said Deed be
registered. [See ODB 17/44.]
The Execution of a Deed from John G Brown & Polly his
wife to Mary Friddle being proved to the satisfaction of the Court by the Certificate
of Thomas Moore Clerk of Bedford County Court of Pleas & quarter Session,
in the State of Tennessee certifying that the same was duly [acknowledged] in
said Court by the said John G Brown and that the said Polly Brown had been
examined privily & apart from her said husband who had acknowledged that
she did sign, seal & execute the same freely & voluntarily without fear
or compulsion of her said Husband, also by the Certificate of Marmaduke
Mitchell presiding Justice of the said Court stating that the said Thomas Moore
was Clerk of said Court, also the Certificate of Joseph McMinn Esqr Governor in
& over the State of Tennessee attested by the great Seal of Said State, the
signature of William Alexander Secretary of said State, certifying that Thomas
Moore & Marmaduke Mitchell each of them respectively held the office they
officially state themselves to hold, that their certificates were in due form
& entitled to full faith and credit. It is therefore Ordered that the said
Deed and the aforesaid certificates be registered. [See ODB 16/371.]

Saturday 29th August 1818, Court met according to

Ordered the Sheriff summon the following Persons to attend

Whereas upon the affidavit of James Craig it appears that at
May Term of this Court 1816 he served as a Juror 4 days & traveled 9 miles,
and at August Term 1817 he served as a Juror 5 days & traveled 9 miles for
which he received Tickets, which he has since unavoidably lost without having
received any pay therefor, Ordered that the County Trustee pay to said Craig
the amount of the said Jurors Tickets.
